Pete Doherty's week ends in a shambles

IT'S not been Pete Doherty's week. First the Babyshambles man made GQ's worst dressed list; his trademark 'I get Doctor Who's hand-me-downs' look not impressing spruced-up editors at the men's magazine.
If it's any consolation to the singer, he's in good company on the list – Gordon Brown and David Beckham were also named among the nation's worst dressed. But it probably isn't.
Then he had to read all about former flame Kate Moss' white wedding to The Kills' guitarist Jamie Hince; a 'source' telling Grazia magazine that the supermodel's summer nuptials will be a glitzier affair than the cheapskate ceremony she had with Doherty in Thailand last year.
"Kate and Pete's blessing in Thailand was only attended by a few people as no one really approved of them getting married," bitched the 'source'. "But all her friends really love Jamie, as does her mother Linda."
Talk about rubbing it in. And Doherty's week was about to get worse – a lot worse.
On Wednesday, the hell-raiser was jailed for a total of 14 weeks for breaching a probation order – after four years of dodging prison.
He's had a series of narrow escapes since 2004, but a judge finally lost patience with him this week after he missed a date with his probation officer and was late for another.
He was given a suspended sentence last year for possession of drugs and driving illegally. But after a hearing at West London Magistrates' Court, Doherty was jailed for "breach of time keeping", "unacceptable behaviour", "non-compliance" with his order and, here's the shocker, "using drugs".
So, in what was already a bad week for the bloke, he was sent to Wormwood Scrubs.
Doubtless he saw it coming, because he was his usual nonplussed self when the jail sentence was passed. "Pete was okay. He didn't want to go to prison but he was philosophical," his usually trusty lawyer Sean Curran confirmed.
"He's not an angel and he will turn up late on occasions, but he did try," added Curran. Oh well, as long as he tried. It's not the first time he's been in the slammer either. The doe-eyed one was sent down for six months in 2003 for breaking into the flat of erstwhile pal and fellow Libertine Carl Barat (as you do).
He only served two months on that occasion, but he has been in court regularly since. In fact, about every other week, now you mention it.
Most say he deserves to go down given his track record – and really, who's to argue?
More's the pity, though. Doherty is a hugely talented songwriter, but his weakness for hard drugs has caused mayhem for his family, friends and fans.
He seemed to be keeping his nose clean recently. He's had fewer run-ins with the law than usual, and it's no coincidence Babyshambles' unlikely re-emergence as a tight, well-drilled unit coincided with his piping down.
Alas, Doherty's gig at the Carling Academy in Glasgow in May is now off, along with a solo one at the Royal Albert Hall later this month, which would have been his biggest to date.
Sadly, talent doesn't get you very far when drug addiction is an ever present spectre.
"I know where the self destruct button is," he said in a televised interview in 2004, "I just have to resist the temptation to push it."
Seems like the boy just can't help himself.
