Separating the cultural wheat from the chaff...
FILM
Move over R2D2, phone home ET - there is a new sci-fi character to fall in love with at the cinemas this weekend, and he goes by the name of Wall.E.

The cream of Disney Pixar's sound and animation talents have got together for this latest project, and the critics are falling over themselves to lavish it with praise.

In the States it has been recommended that Wall.E become part of the film studies curriculum, while here, our own critic, Siobhan Synnot, was blown away by its Kubrickesque ambition.

Wall.E is the last waste disposal unit on an abandoned earth and has given up hope of company until space probe, Eve, appears and the touchpaper of an intergalactic love story is lit.

MUSIC
Edinburgh Castle esplanade will be busy this weekend, as it welcomes Irish pop idols Boyzone this evening, and everyone's favourite Scot rockers, the Proclaimers tomorrow night.

In Glasgow, Debbie Harry proves that she can still impress as she appears with Blondie, supported by Scottish blissed-out pop act A Band Called Quinn, at the ABC, tomorrow night. Also in Glasgow, Lord Of The Rings star Billy Boyd's Beecake perform at the Capital on Sunday night, 8pm.

DAYS OUT
Hopefully the rain will hold off for Inverness's Highland Games this weekend - tomorrow and Sunday - with traditional dancing, athletics and music at Bught Park. Those Reid brothers will be busy again as they perform a special set on Sunday night.

Elsewhere it's the Glasgow River festival along the banks of the Clyde this weekend, with ships and boats out on show to welcome visitors to the celebration of the river's importance within the city.
