GOD HELP THE GIRL

God Help The Girl

Rough Trade RTRADCD489, £11.74
Stuart Murdoch's homage to all things swish and smooth in movies and musicals sounds more like Bert Kampfaert than Belle & Sebastian.

Affectionate parody such as I'll Have To Dance With Cassie is catchy and clever, if pointlessly so.

Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon curbs his dramatic excesses to make Perfection As A Hipster one of the project's successes, with great Sixties girl group backing vocals and strings.

Best of all is revisiting Murdoch's Funny Little Frog sung by internet competition winner Brittany Starling.
