AC/DC ****

HAMPDEN PARK
WHILE those other rock behemoths Spinal Tap have taken the non-labour intensive route with their One Night Only World Tour (that night being in London), there will be no sleep until the end of next year for AC/DC on their mammoth Black Ice tour, such
is the demand to see the Aussie rock'n'rollers.

Current album Black Ice broke records by debuting at number one in 29 countries, taking their album sales tally to 200 million and bucking the trend for falling CD sales – not bad for a band who refuse to issue greatest hits compilations and who have never evolved beyond their trademark caveman rock.

The album title was actually inspired by bitter winter gigs the band have played in Scotland over the years.

The sultry temperature at this sold out Hampden homecoming for the Scots-born Young brothers could not have been more of a contrast.

Even in their dotage, their goodtime rock'n'roll sounded fantastic, with Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be and the immortal Back In Black providing early high points.

Brian Johnson's voice is a raspy marvel – surely there cannot be enough cigarettes and sandpaper in the world? The bug-eyed frontman looked perpetually up to mischief as he skipped around the stage or dangled from the huge bell which tolled the introduction to Hell's Bells.

Not to be outdone, Angus Young – in his signature schoolboy uniform – chose bluesy swagger The Jack as the occasion for a striptease down to his customized boxer shorts. Brother Malcolm, bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd simply attended to the no-nonsense delivery of such lean, economical bruisers as Shot Down In Flames, TNT and the magnificent You Shook Me All Night Long.

Stagecraft was resolutely old school. An enormous inflatable doll straddled a massive model steam train for the duration of Whole Lotta Rosie, their subtle paean to the traditionally built woman – just what were they trying to say? – and a by now demented Angus was elevated on a hydraulic platform for some extended theatrical riffing on Let There Be Rock.

Their encore built on this self-fulfilling prophecy with a crowd-pleasing metallic burst of Loch Lomond and high voltage renditions of Highway To Hell and For Those About To Rock (We Salute You), which even managed to upstage their own closing pyrotechnics for sheer firepower.

Well I'm just back from it and thought it was amazing! My feet are well sore though from standing around for 7 hours!!!!

Unbelievable gig, how Angus does at for 2+ hours at his age is beyond me! When I see the prices charged by the likes of Madonna, its the best £60 I have spent in a long time!

Spoiled somewhat by some of the young drunken idiots who clearly were not there for the music and by the smoking everywhere, despite it being banned! Poorest stewarding at a concert I have ever seen with the standing area looking packed as people just jumped the 3ft fence regularly!

Just woke up after epic day travelling to and from Aberdeenshire to see the greatest rock band ever...what a show. The stadium erupted to some of the best rock songs ever written, but for oldies like myself it proved yet again that the old classics such as Highway To Hell, Back in Black and my favourite of the night Dirty Deeds are still the best.
Only issue was the terrible view a whole section of the crowd had which almost caused a riot, this was especially disspointing for my 15 y/o son whose first time to Hampden and to see AC/DC was spoilt...poor show by greedy promoters.

Great gig - the boys really know how to deliver and have fun while doing it. A couple of shots of Brian J showed him almost in awe of the crowd response - great to see.

Sound wasn't brilliant though - sounded like a rig being pushed too hard and getting a bit muddy on the vocals. And Hampden is easily the worst venue I've been to from a services perspective - the beer system is a joke: buy non-refundable tokens and then take your chances in the queue where they can only serve 10 pints a minute ...with at least 200 thirsty rockers waiting to get multiple pints, it's a recipe for trouble!

Roll on 2019 guys - but not at Hampden, please!

What a gig - I'm still physically and mentally drained by the experience. Those boys sure know how to get a stadium jumping.

Highlight for me was Angus' extended solo on Let There Be Rock - just kept going on and on and getting better and better until the crowd were hoarse with cheering. I was simply gobsmacked by his performance. He may look increasingly like Gollum from Lord of the Rings but you could listen and watch him all night long. The encores Highway to Hell and For Those About to Rock were also awesome.

Down sides were the sound quality - sounded great when Angus was soloing but couldn't seem to handle the full-on high voltage stuff - and not having a great view from the side of the stadium - the stage was only designed to be seen from the front.

However, this didn't really matter - AC/DC's music and showmanship more than made up for it. They managed to give a stadium gig the atmosphere of a much more intimate venue, really making everyone feel part of it.

Hampden was rocked to its core. What a night. Well seeing they couldn't play Edinburgh Castle coz it would have toppled.
Had to leave before "We Salute You" coz of the train travel issues. bummer.

"Whole Lotta Rosie, their subtle paean to the traditionally built woman – just what were they trying to say?"

They're saying that she's a whole lot of woman :)

#2 "...Spoiled somewhat...the smoking everywhere, despite it being banned!"

I'm glad they didn't try chucking Phil Rudd (drums) out for smoking a cigarette!

What a night…. It will never be forgotten!!! From the support acts to the main event it was awesome.
Could have done with the stage being a bit higher though as it was near impossible unless you were 6’11” tall who there appeared to be many and always standing in front of me at 5’8".
Saying that, if the show was on again tonight, I’d be there doing it all again. Pity it appears to be the end of the road for the greatest rock band on the planet. If it is the final tour, they went out in style. Thank you AC/DC we salute you!!!
Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase footage of the show??? It’s a memory I want to keep and show to the grand kids.
Gunner.

So far as I could tell, the band was excellent. But Hampden if you weren't in the right position was a disgrace. I was in the East stand, unable to see the drummer, which was not of itself a major issue, but the sound quality was absolutely terrible. With all 5 playing it really amounted to aural soup with a drum beat. I understand it was much the same for the west stand, although I presume it must have been okay for those in front of the stage and in the main stand. With internet sales, you cannot choose your position, so beware Hampden concert-goers in future.

THE GREAT HAMPDEN RIP-OFF!!! How can they sell tickets at £60 a go to hundreds of punters when their seats are in line or even behind the stage with the only view of the band being when they run down a gangway every now a then?
As for people jumping the barrier Well Done to them if they were in that section everybody should have done it.
Not safe i hear you say well it's not that safe to have crowds of people on the stairs either but thats what happened
Absolute disgrace!!
AC/DC were their usual Brilliant selves though

I was one of the lucky ones got seats directly in front of stage, not that I used them! This is my third time to ACDC and agree with above sound was shocking, sounded like a cheap system overworking which is a really shame as I was telling my friends to expect brilliant sharp vovals and body thumping bass line. Still loved them but spoiled by poor sound. Glad I read this forum as I thought maybe my hearing was bad after listening to ACDC for years. Hope this is not there last tour.

I have been doing searches on the owner of DF Concerts and he mostly spouts on about Ticket touts ripping people off??? Well I am so shocked how can he go on about these folk!! when he can leave hundreds of fans sitting looking at the outside wall of a stage. This concert was probably a "Once in a Lifetime Event" for most fans. I was there on monday night and the stewards were shouting at every one to get back to there seats for health and safety reasons. Surly its in the interest of health and safety not to have so many furious fans in the first place. I travelled for 5 hours to get there and I was totally ripped OFF.. Should it really be a gamble when we fork out hard earned cash to buy concert tickets ???

#9 I totally agree about the stage needing to be higher. I have waited 13 years to see these guys (was heavily pregnant in '96 so missed that concert) and was really looking forward to seeing them - I can now say I was at the concert but I can't say I saw anything other than the back of other peoples heads! I must say that it was a great crowd though and Angus solo was brilliant (I did see that!).

last chance to see the brilliant ACDC spoiled by poor venue and poor organisation. Having secured my tickets from s.e.c. ten minutes into public sale you can imagine my dissapointment at having partial view of the stage from the west stand. First come first served does not exist with seat allocation its a lottery. Given the stage design and position opposite the south stand it was disgusting that tickets were sold for any area of the east and west stand in particlar sections B in the west and F in the east, complete ripp off. As for the sound i believe the P.A. had seen better days but that aside the stage position meant that a zillion watts of aussie rock had about 80 metres before it clattered of the south stand sending split second delays of sound rebounding around the stadium to us peasants in the west and east. It meant most of the time being unable to distinguish a balance from the band. The only place to be was directly facing the stage. So given all that as long as Hampden gigs sell tickets for west and east stands with that stage position i will never return to our national stadium. I will leave the inadequate road infrastructure moan for another day.

Concert was a complete rip off. We had seats in the East stand almost level with the stage and had about 80% restricted view. Sound was terrible here as well.
The stage was not meant to be seen from the sides and tickets should not have been sold there.

I was at the gig and it was fantastic. I was in the standing section on the pitch. The atmosphere was tremendous, as soon as the band started the crowd erupted and kept going for a good while. It was obvious that the heat was taking its toll though later as people retreated to the rear and things quietened down.

I have to say that for a bunch of old guys AC/DC definitely impressed - even as a bunch of youngsters they would do well although they are getting on and a wee but less physical. I'd have traded "Dog eat dog" for "Riff Raff" or "Problem Child" but otherwise the set list was well balanced between the Bon Scott material and the more recent. Overall they were very tight and pretty close to the original renditions of each song.

I was worried about the sound when I arrived as we just caught the end of "The Answer" and they didn't sound good. "The Subways" sounded better though once we got to our chosen spot and AC/DC were excellent. I was surprised how quickly my hearing returned to normal the next day.

If this is the last ever tour (and that's got to have taken it out of them), I'm chuffed to have made it. AC/DC are rock gods.

Wendybell comment 15.

I can explain why you had a bad night. AC/DC played on Tuesday.
The lead singer of the Subways was a complete Nobber.
