JABBO SMITH

The Complete Jabbo Smith Hidden Treasure Sessions

****

Lonehill Jazz LHJ10352, £9.78
Jabbo Smith was a legendary hot trumpeter who provided serious competition for Louis Armstrong in the 1920s and 1930s, then disappeared into obscurity – only to be found working for a car rental company in 1961 when the two recording sessions featured here took place. These unedited tracks remained unheard for 22 years and, until now, existed only on long out-of-print LPs in the early 1980s. Yes, they're raggedy, but they show that Smith's dazzling talent was still there.
