SOMALIA will allow foreign powers to use force if necessary against pirates who are holding a ship loaded with tanks for $20 million (£11.3 million) ransom. This raises the stakes for bandits currently facing off against the United States, who will soon be joined by Russia on the high seas.
Last week's hijacking of the Ukrainian ship MV Faina – carrying 33 Soviet-made T-72 tanks, rifles, and heavy weapons – was the highest profile act of piracy in the dangerous waters off Somalia this year. The ship is surrounded by several US warships
and American helicopters are buzzing overhead.

Moscow has sent a warship to protect the few Russian hostages on board, but it will take a week for the ship to arrive off the coast of central Somalia, where the Faina has been anchored since Thursday. Most of the 20 crew are Ukrainian or Latvian; one Russian has died, apparently of illness.

"The international community has permission to fight with the pirates," Mohammed Jammer Ail, the Somali foreign ministry's acting permanent director, said yesterday.

He also said negotiations between the ship's Ukrainian owners and the pirates were taking place by telephone, but that "no other side is involved in negotiations".

Somalia's president, Abdullahi Yusuf, also urged foreign nations to help Somalis to fight piracy.

"The government has lost patience and now wants to fight pirates with the help of the international community," the president said yesterday in a radio address.

But there was no reaction yesterday from the estimated 30 hijackers on board the Faina to the prospect of facing two of the world's most powerful navies. Their spokesman did not answer his satellite phone.

A day earlier, the pirates denied reports that an argument over whether to surrender led to a shootout that killed three pirates. Instead, the spokesman said, they were enjoying a feast to end Ramadan.

The dangerous cargo on the Faina has drawn worldwide attention.

American military officials and diplomats say the weapons are destined for southern Sudan, but Kenyan officials insist the weapons are bound for their country.

As if that's really gonna matter to the Bear. Just for info sake, last monday, my stepson became a U.S. citizen. Very soon, he will be joining the Coast Guard. I was there in Norfolk,Va. for the ceremony, and, over beers, and much love, did mention that the Coast Guard may well be sent to far off seas to fight piracy. He said, and I quote"F++n Good,it's a fight worth fighting for". Sorry to boor you all with this.

The Sudanese are a violent bunch who have killed millions of their people in civil wars in the past 20 years.

They earn about $2,000 per worker per year , slightly more than the communist Chinese citizens do.

Its a joke to read they will give permission to Uncle Sam and Russia to use force against these so-called pirates.

If the Russian Bear decides to incinerate that ship, and all aboard, they will do that and no one will stop them
And if Uncle Sam decides to bring in a bunch of counselors to talk to the pirates so be it.

The ruskies should drag them off the ship and set them alight on the high sea. Using 120 % proof vodka.

I wouldn't like to be a hostage in this scenario. Mr. Putin is telling Mr. Medvedev that a few innocents never stopped him from letting slip the dogs of war.

The Russians don't beat around the bush. They're not a whole lot different to the Americans in some respects. They'll probably charge in with guns blazing, wiping out all the pirates and half the crew.

The upside to that type of raid of course will be a speedy pirate retreat whenever a Russian ship appears on the horizon.

F**K the Russians are coming, let's get 'outta' here.

"what does that have to do with the article"
Perhaps you should learn to read the headline..
"Sudan agrees US and Russia may use force against tank pirates"

I understand why you and your country are frightened by your giant neighbour, the USA.
I guess that's why you have your head firmly entrenched up Bush's backside. Enjoy the view Scullion, you American weasel.

I really don't care about the pirates, nor the damn ship or its crew. JUST SINK IT ALREADY!!! I am tired of all of these people in our villages, let them go back out to sea and hunt for the next ship.

The Somalian government welcomes Russian intervention in this crisis but is not too pleased about "other" warships in the area. The only other warships identified in the area are US.
Expect regime change to follow.

The hijacking of the Ukrainian vessel offers an object lesson about converging Russian and American interests in many areas.
If the pirates' latest caper helps bring Americans and Russians together to police sea lanes and guard against failed states, their predatory crimes will have served the cause of international law and order.
