It's heading straight for us!,

Leith 30/10/2007 12:58:33

From what i've read Charlotte Square was originally called George Square - hence the two saints; Andrew & George at either end with Princes and Queen either side of George blah blah. All a symbol of English Rule

Hey if we get independence can we rename them all? Salmond Street? MacFadden Square, Barry Fergusson Lane? (the latter being easy to spot as it passes at right angles to the rest :))

"... Edinburgh's strict rules for street naming and re-naming - the responsibility for which falls to the council ..."

Perhaps they would like to tell us why they are renaming the historical Edmonstone area (from the top of Old Dalkeith Road to the Wisp), a name that goes back centuries ... to Shawfair ... and where did they get THAT name??

When I lived in Lusaka one of the major roads through the city was called 'Saddam Hussein Boulevard'. After Kaunda was defeated and Frederick Chiluba became the new president, the name of the road was changed to 'Los Angeles Boulevard' apparently in memory of the race riots in LA which happened around that time (early 90s).
I don't think streets should be named after people....Heaven help us if we ever end up with Tony Blair Street or George Bush Road!!! (Never a better reason to move house)

Tollcross 30/10/2007 14:27:47

Here in Tollcross we had a successful campaign to name a new street after Private Charles Kennedy VC who won his Victoria Cross in South Africa and died tragicaly in 1907 in the old Royal Infirmary after receiving severe injuries saving children from a run-away horse in Leith Walk.

The name of the street is Charles Kennedy Walk and links High Riggs and East Fountainbridge.

Private Charles Kennedy VC was born in the West Port and is buried in Merchiston Cemetery.

Big Aggie,

Almost anything is better than the old Labour council habit of naming streets after their socialst heroes. I feel pity on a daily basis for the poor sods in Newtongrange who have to live in McGahey Court.

Märiö Antoinette,

What about the people of Prestonpants who have to live in Sheena Eastonstrasse ?

#11 Helen,
"Heaven help us if we ever end up with Tony Blair Street or George Bush Road"

Probably why the street naming policy is only extended to dead people...although I doubt we'll ever have a "Bush Brae"

21

MARCHER,

Muirhouse 31/10/2007 01:47:19

And here's me thinking that Romanov Road was a one-way street - anyway, rather call it Gladima Hibee Ave!?!
