CLAPPERTON/ VAAGE/NESS

Bad News From The Desert

**

Aurora, ACD5053, £12.99
Military musicians don't normally start out as professional musicians who decide to become soldiers, so some military bands might be daunted by the skills displayed by academy-trained Norwegian Army Band Berge. James Clapperton's 'Songs And Dances Of Death' was written to explore the consequences of war; Knut Vaage tries to extend the boundaries of military music; Jon Øvind Ness combines humour with serious musical explorations. While not to everyone's taste, this pushes the limits. The skills are undeniable, and the enthusiasm under conductor Peter Szilvay clearly evident.
