EDWARD ELGAR
Part-Songs
*****
Naxos 8.570541, £5.99
The choral festival movement that burgeoned in the 19th century fed on works such as these by Edward Elgar, brief choral pieces, highly expressive, establishing a sort of lay choral tradition to rival that of Anglican cathedrals.
This impressive album brings together a variety of music; his most popular part-song, 'My Love Dwelt In A Northern Land', the somewhat weird 'Owls (An Epitaph)', the sprightly and sombre side by side.
The Cambridge University Chamber Choir under Christopher Robinson give a coloured, tonally pure performance of delightfully composed music.
