Today, English contralto Kathleen Ferrier is largely known through her performance of 'Blow The Wind Southerly', but her repertoire went far beyond English folk songs. Appearances at the 1947 Edinburgh Festival were the first of many; Benjamin Britten composed 'The Rape Of Lucretia' with her in mind for the title role; and she performed with Bruno Walter and Herbert von Karajan.
This enthralling album brings together recordings originally issued as separate LPs, and if some background sound still remains, the clarity of the recordings and all-round strength of the ensemble overcome any doubts.
It's a well-paced, thoughtful and fitting tribute to a great singer.
