TIERNEY SUTTON BAND
Desire

Telarc CD-83685, £12.72
California-based jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton's latest CD may be made up mainly of standards from the Great American Songbook but, in most cases, they're completely reworked and turned inside out as part of an exploration of their darker side and of Sutton's bugbear – materialism. On some tracks – 'Skylark' and 'It's Only A Paper Moon', for example – the strategy backfires, but on others, the fresh approach does demand attention. Mind you, Sutton's recitations of passages from the Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah are distinctly out of place.
