QUEEN of the South went second-top as Clyde slumped to their first home defeat of the season. After a drab first half, the game came to life with two quickfire goals as the Doonhamers ran out deserved winners.
Yet the Bully Wee made a bright start and David McKay was almost rewarded for his industry after just seven minutes.
At the other end, Gary Arbuckle's pace carried him deep into the home box but Neil McGregor did enough to ensure that he was u
nable hit the target.
The Doonhamers might have broken the deadlock before the break when Stevie Tosh's deep free kick found its way through to the unmarked Craig Sives. However, the on-loan Hearts defender was off balance and could not direct his shot well enough.
Paul Emslie lifted the home fans on the restart with an audacious effort from the halfway line but Cammy Bell, backtracking frantically, held the ball under his bar.
Then the game turned decisively in Queens favour with two goals in quick succession. Arbuckle was first to strike when he drilled through a ruck of players after Clyde failed to clear Stephen Dobbie's cross.
And Dobbie doubled the advantage when he applied the finishing touch to a fine move involving Stephen Simmons and Michael McGowan. That was enough to settle the outcome and Queens almost stretched their lead when Arbuckle's header was brilliantly saved by Peter Cherrie.
