WHO'S in the Codeine Velvet Club?
This brand spanking new collaboration between The Fratellis' frontman Jon Lawler and Glaswegian chanteuse Lou Hickey came about when Lawler decided to take a break prior to recording the third Fratellis album to tinker about with some different ideas.
What do they sound like?
As The Last Shadow Puppets are to Arctic Monkeys, so Codeine Velvet Club would appear to be to The Fratellis – less of the stomping indie anthems, more of the refined retro stylisation, with shared vocals, big band backing, sharp suits and cocktail dresses.
When does the Club officially open for business?
The pair have already recorded an album, slated for release in November on Island Records (also The Fratellis' record label). According to Lawler, one of the songs, I Would Send You Roses, was originally written for the Fratellis to perform with Roger Daltrey.
Where can I hear more?
At the moment, cards are being played fairly close to chests, but you can check out a clip of the taster track Vanity Kills on www.codeinevelvetclub.com and behold the whole thing at www.youtube.com/watch?v>_jQm6FnHzsA. Or you can catch their first ever gig at Classic Grand, Glasgow tomorrow.
