SOLDIERS FOR THE COVENANT Edzell Castle, nr Brechin, 17, 18 May, Noon, 01356 648 631.

This serene castle will be transformed to face a turbulent time of civil war. Fraser's Dragoons will re-enact the preparations made by the Covenanters in the 17th century, to defend the country against Cromwell's invading army. Visitors will be surrounded by the boom of cannons, the crack of musketry and the clash of swords.

Living history groups bring Bothwell Castle to life with an exciting afternoon of medieval entertainment. Visitors will be taken on a journey to the times
of heroes such as Robert the Bruce with a colourful medieval camp jam-packed with crafts, spear, sword and archery demonstrations and opposing forces battling it out.

The knights go north in a mini-Highland tour performing a breath-taking display of duelling at Urquhart Castle and Fort George. The highlight event of the year and the only one of its kind taking place in Scotland. An unforgettable and hugely popular display of horsemanship, skill and daring, with a colourful events programme throughout the afternoon.

MAKE IT MEDIEVAL Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries 2, 3 August,Noon, 01387 770 244

Return to medieval times and the atmosphere of an authentic medieval castle. Visitors can undertake the challenges required to become a knight, learn how to become a royal princess and see the skills used hundreds of years ago at the merchants' camp. Knights will clash in a dramatic finale with an exciting display of swordsmanship.

GO DOUNE IN HISTORY Doune Castle, nr Stirling, 24 August, Noon, 01786 841 742

The fortress will be brought to life with a medieval camp and a display of weapons and armoury. Visitors can meet the captured Redcoat soldiers, and hear their dramatic tales of escape after they were imprisoned at the castle after the Jacobite victory in 1746.
