ALCOHOL advertising should be banned as part of efforts to tackle problem drinking, doctors said yesterday.
The British Medical Association (BMA) conference in Liverpool heard that alcohol misuse affected people of all ages and social groups and extra efforts were needed to tackle the problem.

The conference also heard calls for England to follow Scotla
nd with plans to introduce a minimum price per unit of alcohol to combat cut-price drinks.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has given a lukewarm response to English chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson's idea for a 50p unit price, saying he wants to protect the "sensible majority of moderate drinkers".

But doctors backed Sir Liam yesterday, saying more needs to be done to tackle the UK's drinking culture.

The conference heard that one in four adults is drinking at levels that are hazardous to health and 36,000 children aged 11-15 get drunk each week.

The Scottish Government is considering a minimum price per unit of alcohol, likely to be between 40p and 50p.

Dr Chandra Mohan, from London, who proposed the motion, said research showed minimum pricing could cut hospital admissions by 100,000 every year in England.

good, finally a sensible suggestion from our new moral guardians, not advertising drink will cure the problem, just like it solved the illegal drugs problem in one fell swoop.

Stop advertising drink and everyone will stop drinking.

What a ridiculous idea... And these are DOCTORS, you know, the people we entrust our lives to when we are ill. Hardly inspires confidence does it?

Maybe doctors should concentrate on healing the sick and leave the propagating of stupid ideas to politicians?

Doctors are fascists. End of story.

Their answer to everything is tax and ban.

The medical profession is very bad for your health.

The problem with all these 'health' generated ideas is that they become self fulfilling prophecies. Like Passive Smoking, if you say something is harmful enough the gullible politicians and public start to believe it.

It's like the cigarette vending machine argument that under 18's regularly bought from this source. The fact that it was total fallacy made no difference to politicians.

So rest assured alcohol advertising will be banned. Except probably spirits.

Certain doctors only become fascists when they are asked to toe a party line in order to retain/increase their cash grant.

Fascist in the main comes from governments. They then apply pressure to "scientists" in order to give their idiotic ideas creedance in the eyes of the non-thinking majority of the population. In short, if a politician says something, it is open to debate, however if someone with letters before and after their name says something and backs it with their professional credentials, no-one argues in the main.

This kind of thing has given us the concepts of passive smoking, climate change, global warming, binge drinking. There is little or no hard evidence to suggest that any of these things actually exist or indeed are problems. However, if a man in a white coat says so, the majority will not argue. It's the "old boy" network gone mad and it's about time legislation was passed to stop it happening.

Why do we even listen to them - they admitted they had made up the alcohol unit guidelines sat round a table, and not based on any research.

Utterly ridiculous.

Banned, adverts for tobacco products.
Ban adverts for alcohol.
Ban adverts for food to avoid obesity.
Most of all ban doctors from pushing dangerous drugs.

Given that upwards of 100k people die of neglect or mistakes by medical staff your call for a ban on doctors is statistically and scientifically valid.

So come of Chief Medical Officer lets see some positive health care. Ban any doctor or nurse who kills a patient.

Likely as not, the exact same plebs who supported the smoking ban are likely to come down in support of any action on drinking.

This will continue until one day they find themselves voting to tax or ban something that THEY like. Then, and only then, are they likely to wake up and realise the error of their ways.

By then it will be too late.

Sadly the warning will go unheeded Fuel Head, they'll sit back and say they won't do it just like most of the pubs and smokers.

The time has come for all the vulnerable groups to unite, the smokers, the drinkers and the obese we are all targets, between us we have the majority of the country, between us we can end this tyranny, there are a number of groups now fighting this, join one or write to your mp, tell them you have had enough, fire them and replace them with someone who actually cares for the people. The numbers are out there to do it we have tools to win if we use them.

The "research" figures quoted - "100 000 fewer hospital admissions" - are pure plucked-from-the-air hokum. They also claimed 300 000 fewer sick days : neat round figures, but mysteriously the number of deaths claimed to be preventable was precisely 3 393!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Al Gore would be proud of them!

There is only one political party in the entire United Kingdom who consistently supported smokers rights, and the rights of pubs and clubs to run their businesses as they see fit. That same party will support and fight on behalf of any group to retain Freedom and Democracy and the right to choose. They are the only UK party who have Freedom to Choose as part of their Logo.

They are the second largest UK party in the EU who are fighting for Britain's right to self govern. That party is the United Kingdom Independence Party. Vote in your millions and we can form the next Government and amend the smoking ban and return to British Citizens the Freedom to Choose. Visit ukip.org
