The Edinburgh Royal Infirmary is considering introducing a "welcome card" scheme containing hygiene advice for all new patients in a bid to combat superbugs.
Specialists at the hospital have approached the Cumberland Infirmary, in Cumbria, where the hospital's Maple team have used the cards to establish joint responsibility between patients and staff for a healthier hospital environment.

Inspired by the Matron's Charter, which promotes the ethos Our Ward, Our Problem, Our Solution, the team decided to look at how they could make changes for the better.

The cards also certified that their bed frame, mattress, locker, table and other equipment had been thoroughly cleaned prior to their admission.

The welcome cards are now being rolled out across the trust and some community hospitals, and the ERI is understood to be considering bringing a similar scheme to Edinburgh.

If all the posters TV adverts and horror stories don't get through to Patients and shamefully staff then what makes these cards different, a fortune will be paid and put straight in the bin like junk mail and How much of the LOTHIAN WIDE budget will be taken to pay once again for the failings of the RIE and how much will the other Lothian hospitals suffer as a result? It is the RIE responsibility the rest of Lothian's hospitals which are cleaner and more hygienic will be penalised for the dirty unhygienic one, its up to the RIE to clean up their own act why should we all suffer again and again for the PFI disaster we are already paying TWICE what we should into this white elephant take the money out of the bank and private shareholders who are profiting from the taxpayer or better still the board of NHS lothian who put us in this mess to begin with they need to answer for their failures and not simply be allowed to continue in their posts unchallenged if it was coming out of their pockets they would soon have it fixed. What about theatre acquired infections if NHS Lothian can't keep their theatres clean then it's not the patients fault surely but knowing this lot they will seek to deflect the blame here too and the patient will get a card to read and be expected to scrub up too to take the heat off the Board. This lot are a joke.
