Hearts face £40,000 fine for poor discipline

HEARTS face a potential £40,000 fine from the Scottish Football Association for their poor disciplinary record this season, the Evening News can reveal.
Gary Glen incurred the Edinburgh club's ninth red card of the campaign against Gretna on Tuesday night, which is expected to result in hefty sanction.

The SFA warned Hearts about their players' conduct back in January following four red cards and a series of yellows during the first half of the campaign. However, five further dismissals since the turn of the year will prompt the governing body's disciplinary committee to take action.

Glen, Calum Elliot (twice), Christian Nade, Michael Stewart (twice), Eduardas Kurskis, Marius Zaliukas and Lee Wallace have all been ordered off this season.

It would be the fourth consecutive year that the SFA have meted out disciplinary punishment to Hearts. A £5000 fine was imposed in 2005, which doubled to £10,000 in 2006 and doubled again to £20,000 last year. The SFA's policy of multiplying fines for repeat offenders means a £40,000 sanction is now likely.

Drew Herbertson, head of the disciplinary department at Hampden, told the Evening News: "Hearts were warned by ourselves in January about their disciplinary record for the first half of the season between the months of August and December.

"In due course, the disciplinary committee will come to consider the disciplinary analysis for this season. At that juncture, they will take a view on the records of the clubs which come under scrutiny.

"It's entirely a matter for the committee to take a view on Hearts if they are at the wrong end of the table. What sanction is applied to the club is at the committee's discretion when it comes to repeat offenders."

Zaliukas was assessed by medical staff at Riccarton yesterday but the head knock which forced him off against Gretna is not serious. "He's fine, it wasn't a bad injury so he can go home to Lithuania now with a clean bill of health," said Stephen Frail, the interim manager.

Meanwhile, Hearts fielded a team containing mostly reserve and under-19 players yesterday in a closed-doors friendly with Queen of the South at Riccarton. The Dumfriesshire side won the game 1-0 as they continue preparations for the Scottish Cup final against Rangers.

"I was pleased with the performance of our team because it was a very young side and they were playing the Scottish Cup finalists," said Frail. "Players like Craig Sives, who has hardly played since being on loan at Dundee earlier this season, were involved so it was a worthwhile exercise."

The Manager,

Ukio Bankas, Castle Street 15/05/2008 11:52:52

If Hearts think they're getting another overdraft extension to pay this they can think again. If they can get some more season ticket money in then I'll sit down and discuss a possible extension.

The trouble is the money is out of the account just as soon as it enters.

Sign up for your season tickets. We need the cash!

First of all: R.I.P Tommy, a good man who will be sadly missed.

Re: Story: 40,000?... I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. Refs are poor but we have to take some resposibility for this ourselves... You need a decent management infrastructure to address this.

#1 Serg': Nobody cares about the opinions of a sad little boy who spent 18 months of his pathetic little existense pretending to be Lithuanian and even insulting his fellow Hibs fans calling them scum etc in order to try and win favour among the Hearts fans before turning on them.

You are as sad as he who must not be named and a laughing stock to all who were witness to your sad little enterprise.

You also cloned people's I.D's and pretended to be them.

Question: Is your life really that empty and hopeless that you have to continually pretend to be someone you are not in order to feel comfortable conversing with normal people?

BLANK the PLANK

For a while I do think we had a disciplinary problem this season but nowhere near as bad it was made out. Perhaps partly to our own doing, we are the club everyone loves to hate and DO get worse treatment from referee's and the SFA because they know no-one will back Hearts up and we have a mad-cap owner.

Had to laugh at "Walters Proud Scottish Bravehearts" yesterday. Those people are the scurge of not just Scottish football but Scotland. How many Saltires did you see last night?

Jam Tarts 1874,

On the Rebound 15/05/2008 12:05:23
Much of this has come about due to the lack of a decent leader on the pitch as per the other discussions. All the other teams have players who are constantly in the faces of the referees, putting the case for their players, doing their best to influence proceedings etc etc. We just don't have that and it costs us.

Some of the red cards this season have been terrible decisions by the officials, particularly the debacle at Tannadice in January and Stewart's nonesense at Gretna. I am glad Elliot was sent off a couple of times though - otherwise he might have played more often.

I saw one saltire... 150, 000 Scots and one saltire?

Thank crivvens for that too as i would hate someone to associate that bunch of animals with our country, Representatives of Scotland???

Stabbings, bottles thrown, topless 50-odd year olds (both sexes), cars overturned, offensive sectarian banners and songs.

yeah, I will really be backing that lot in anything?

good for Scottish football???... My aching sides!

Glad they were horsed and hope QOS do the same to them.

#12 I had the lunchtime news on at home... 1.30pm Manchester City Centre they were praising Rangers and there fans yet in the background were thousands signing "billy boys.... up to our knees in..."

Yer great group of people, red hands, union jacks, ulster brigade. Disgusting. I hope they don't come back, lets face it they want to be in England anyway.

Bring on the abuse.........

I was DELIGHTED that Rangers got pumped last night. Outside of the Old Firm I will support any SCOTTISH side in Europe, even once every 10 years when Hibs get in, Intertattie aside.

The Old Firm are despised by many, loved by a bigoted minority of our population and I nearly wet myself laughing at the greetin faced wee bigots, sharing a bottle of buckie on the way home no doubt.

Rangers scum deserved everything they had coming.

Jamboy, I was watching the build up on the news leading up to the game and the group of fans behind the reporter had the Union Jack with the red hand of ulster. I was under the impression that sort of stuff was banned?

I did however notice the one saltire that you mentioned! If Im correct it was hung over the second tier in between a few union jacks. If not then there must have been two!! Shock horror!

The saddest thing of all is that these in-bred neanderthal's are teaching their children the same sectarian, anti-catholic filth that they too were taught as a child.

9 red cards, ok. 2 of those brandished were an absolute joke:

Michael Stewart v Gretna at Fir Park, barely skiffed some Gretna players chest and the guy went down like a ton of bricks with his hand over his eye. Cheating, simulation, ref reacted to it.

Eduardis Kurskis, at Tynecastle, can't remember the opponents. Merely lifted his glove to some forward who had just fouled him.

Now compare this to the offences continually committed, and overlooked, by Old Firm players:

Barry Ferguson squeezing the throat of Chris Maguire, unpunished!

Daniel Cousin putting his head to Lee Wilie, unpunished.

Well done SFA, good work

JT&T there was a moment just before the Zenit goal when Rangers had a throw in on the far side. With 20 minutes to go they were even then trying to waste time, im sure Archie even made a comment. Would have been a travesty if the cup had gone to Rangers.

As for the fans in Manchester, I have heard similar stories from friends (i use that term loosely ;o) that made the trip. Whether or not it was started by the minority the majority joined in with the singing etc and the general drunken behaviour was always to be expected.

One of the major problems was the fact that the majority of the Rangers fans banned from travelling to away games in europe were free to head down the road to manchester. I predicted to my mates last night before the game that the riot police would be out by 10pm! Silly me I suppose giving the Gers fans the benefit of the doubt that they would at least wait til half time before rioting!!

(this wasnt in his plans and i think he expected to get extra time at 0-0) So well done rankers your team pathetic and your fans are animals. Ban the soapdodgers from europe next year give the extra champ league place to Motherwell and that way Dundee utd can get the other cup spot.

Spl website, Rankers are not going to have an open top failure bus tour of glasgow due to the death of tommy burns. OH REALLY so its not because they are too ashamed of themselfs and the fans to do it.

Do you think they would have adopted the same respectfull policy if they had actually won the cup (not a chance).

Maybe they can ask SPL/SFA or god even to extend the summer and postppone the start of next season so they can all have a good summer break.

i personally dont think the refs coming out and saying sorry is doing any good at all and in my opinion is almost making it worse.
they are meant to explain but they just say it was a mistake or didnt have a good view when the truth is it was rangers or celtic....what did you want me to upset them!!???

im sure the explanation for fergusons basketball in the semi was goncalves had just got away with a handball....that says it all really. we are still suffereing from leveins outburst when he was with us and for mikos "assault" on andy davis.

i fully expect dundee utd to start getting even dodgier decisions now....

think you have to feel a lttle sorry for the fans who travelled to watch it on the big screen which didnt work!! think i would have been well pi**ed off too!!

still....it was rangers fans!!!...so its alot funnier but i can see why they started throwing stuff etc..

still a scurge on society along with their "we arent sectarian" counterparts and football was the real winner last night. the shots of the ugly greetin faced rangers fans were priceless!! boy did i laugh.

#72 - I was actually at Manchester last night and to be fair to the Rangers fans there were small pockets of people who were causing problems, the vast majority behaved themselves, they were noisy, they were disapointed but in the main they behaved. The major issue was that around 40000 were jammed into a fans zone to watch the game when the screen failed and they never got to see the match. I listened to the Radio this morning where the Manchester Police Chief said that 30 fans were arrested, all for minor offences and with regard the fans who were arrested in relation to the stabbing incident, there were two other stabbing incidents reported on the same bulletin both non football related, so give those fans a break.

74 Busby, just watching those links on skynews and it is actually so much worse than i actually first thought!! Absolute disgrace, there must be about 20-30 jumping on one copper!! Then you see them all fighting amongst themselves!! Completely unbelievable.

The best thing the SPL can do for Scottish football is withdraw these yobs from european competition before uefa enforces it!

johnny jambo, take a look at the link above from sky news then i can assure you you will be changing your statement. I appreciate that one third of 100000 is classed as the minority but come on!!!

I spoke to a mate who was down there as well and he said that it was realtively good atmosphere in certain areas but to get home he had to go through mass riots and folk running literally for their lifes.

Go to SKY News and view the cctv coverage - Any possible sympathy to Weegie red tops and Gers fans soon disipates.

#84 Having watched the news and watching rangers fans punch each other why should I give them a break.

If I was ever fortunate enough to watch Hearts in a European final I would like to think I would be having banter and a good time with fellow Hearts fans.

I don't care how much they had to drink, the big screen cutting out etc - make the most of the occasion.

The fans involved in trouble last night are total morons!!

Breaking my own rule about posting on a Hearts thread here, but in response to some of the previous contributions.

Do you think yesterday was the most Union Jacks Manchester has seen since the Queen's Jubilee in '77 or do we have to go back to the actual Coronation to top the wonderful Rangers support?

I understand from a friend in Northern Ireland that when Scotland play England the majority of Ulstermen want England to win. Is this the same for Rangers fans?

#77 - I bet every fan off every othe SPL team are hoping they are not hypocritics. How nice would it be to watch a game without them smelly soap dodging peg selling scum bags, can you imagine not hear they're bigotority for the 90 mins it would be nice so please do stay away from all grounds.

84, Dont come on this site with the word jambo in your name and actually stick up for them, just remeber the only reason they all travelled 240 miles to manc-chester was to watch the telly (how sad can you get) without the risk of the detector vans turning up at half time. funnily enough i bet that most of the 33000 fans at 5h1tbrox had never even been to a game before. I say ha ha ha to them

Lenny,

Have to agree with you all here, Rangers fans were a complete disgrace last night. Scotlands shame indeed. Strangely however, reading the Daily Record this morning (I know, I know, but it was sitting on the train!!) I was under the impression that the Rangers fans had been attacked by the Police!!! Which is not exactly how it looked on the CCTV footage I just saw. In fact it looked like about a hundred in-bred cowards in Union Jacks attacking one police man!

I hope UEFA throw the book at them.

busbyfh,

Surprising that there has not already been e-mailed pi55 takes out of Rangers and their fans yet.

Unfortunately , as some of them will still be bitter about last night and will get wound up about the guaranteed forthcoming pi55takes - Some of them will stoop to concocting some twisted and tasteless wind ups about Tommy Burns (one of the good guys)

Johnny Jambo,

#90 and others, I have seen Sky News footage and I agree that there was some trouble, but again it was a minority.

I just wonder how us Hearts fans would behave if we had travelled to a Final to watch a game on a big screen only to find that the screen didn't work and we could not see the game, would behave or any other teams fans come to that.

Busby, I have one, please read....

"UN warning of humanitarium disaster, thousands of poorly educated people displaced and sleeping rough, vomiting and diarrhoea rife, major civil disturbance and violence on the streets. Residents of Manchester are being moved to Burma for their own safety!"

Shocking behaviour by these pea brained H-uns on Sky News report.

Fan blames the TV breakdown? Manchester put up the TVs as a concession to those who could'nt get to the match and this is how they are repaid. H-uns didn't have a God given right to watch the game, they should be thankful for what they got. Had to laugh at the Buckie bottle!

Rankgers, you are an absolute F.cking disgrace to Scottish football. We always knew that, now the English are finding out the hard way.

Tommy Burns - a real gentleman and one who was always was quick to support Scotland, depsite the shabby was he wasa treated by the SFA. A very sad loss to Scottish Football.

As for Rangers - how glad I am that they are a British/Northen Ireland club and not Scottish. yet again their fans were an absolute disgrace -attempted murder, rioting, attacking police innocent bystanders and ambulance men. A small minority - funny how a small minority can cause usch mayhem. In any decent society their supporters would be simply be banned and the club demoted to the league below. What will the SFA do? -hee haw.

In defence of the guy who is sprawled across the front pages bleeding on the ground (wearing a saltire might I add) if you look at the video on the daily record page you can actually see him and his mate trying to escape the melee by moving in the other direction from the police. The police just seem to stemroll right over him and knock him to the ground. Watch as his mate tries to put his fag back in his mouth as he lies bleeding.
