Hearts winger McCann to sign for Falkirk

Published Date: 14 May 2008
HEARTS winger Neil McCann was scheduled to undergo a medical at Falkirk today as he prepares to sign a two-year contract with John Hughes' side.
The 33-year-old is free to leave Tynecastle after contract negotiations with the club hierarchy stalled. His two-and-a-half-year deal is due for expiry and he hopes to finalise a move to Falkirk by this evening.

Other parties interested in McCann are understood to include Jim Jefferies' Kilmarnock but Falkirk remain clear favourites to secure the former Scotland international. During contract discussions with Hearts, the club stated their wish for McCann to assume more coaching responsibilities whilst remaining registered as a player.

Although keen to augment his coaching skills during his veteran years, the winger is determined to continue in a predominantly playing context for as long as possible after losing much of the last two years to injury.

Hughes today spoke of his delight at luring the player to Falkirk. "It's fantastic for us to be getting a player of Neil McCann's quality and experience. I knew after speaking to him for two minutes that he will play a big part for us. He still has that twinkle in his eye and that enthusiasm.

"We have a lot of young players at Falkirk and my team on Saturday was aged 23 and under. Neil's experience will help them massively. He's a right good footballer, and who better to learn from than someone who has done what he has done in the game?

"He'll sign a playing contract but I know he's into the coaching side and studying for badges so there will be opportunities for him in that area at Falkirk."

McCann, a member of Hearts' 1998 Scottish Cup-winning side, returned to Tynecastle from Southampton in January 2006 during Graham Rix's brief tenure.

He injured medial knee ligaments on his debut at Rugby Park and sustained a double leg break against Celtic earlier this season. He believes defecting to Falkirk will offer a fresh beginning and his admiration for Hughes' management skills is thought to be a major factor in the move.

Meanwhile, Hearts were today studying video footage of last night's defeat by Gretna at Fir Park before deciding whether to appeal Gary Glen's red card.

Interim manager Stephen Frail visited the referee's room after the match for clarification from John Underhill on why the teenager had been dismissed. "The ref said he felt Gary kicked him (Gretna's Craig Barr], which is violent conduct, but he was sent off for an elbow.

"I need to take his word for it but I need to see it again before we make a decision on it. We'll certainly look at it."

McCann was a poor signing in the first place but its a shame he won't stay on as a coach as, by all accounts, he has helped out in that area. Dare I say it we could probably use a bit of Scottish influence in the staff next season.

Best of luck him anyway. His first spell was fantastic and the memories of him roasting Rangers and the wee team won't be forgotten.

Bye terry,

Sorry that it never workked out second time round but your fitness is not too good really.

Thanks for everything, the way you used to go past defenders and your one-time blistering pace were a pleasure to watch. 1998 and a Scottish Cup in the bag and you, Mickey, Baggio, Adam, salvatori and Rousette running the ugly sisters close in the league.

Always be a legend in my eyes, good luck for the future.

Mature comments Riley and Serg'... well done.

This is great news for reducing the overdraft. Still, I know for a fact his departure was because he was offered a massive drop in salary AND expected to take on extra coaching responsibilities in response to the ineffectual setup there at present.

He never gets out and he's never really smiley,

He's just moved house from Motherwell in to a public cr*pper.

Good decision to move McCann on, especially if they can keep Driver (and he if gets a game ahead of some waste of space Lithuanian "winger").

He's right to continue to play for as long as he can and he won't get that opportunity with Hearts. He will always be a legend from his first spell.

NJ I appreciate some of your comments but your negativity does continue to astound me:

"especially if they can keep Driver (and he if gets a game ahead of some waste of space Lithuanian "winger").

Driver played too many games this season, ask anyone who goes to the games, he clearly looked jaded and could have been replaced by a "waste of space" far sooner.

I really just meant that Driver is clearly the best left winger at the club in my view but that doesn't mean that he won't be sold if any bid is made or that he will be selected in the team, as ability and form are unrealted to team selection at Hearts, a fact that nobody can deny.

The difference between Hearts and hibs is that last season Hearts finished 4th and we considered it to be a bad season, hibs will be no better than 4th this season and you seem to all be happy it.

As for McCann, his experience could have been useful. I watched him a few times at the reserves helping out the young lads. I assume he wanted to continue being paid well in excess of his value.

never ever have i heard of hearts fans lapping up finishing 4th....

its not much to say we had a better season than hibs...we usually do...granted its not the norm this season but well done for reaching the top six...then getting bummed in every game. you worry bout your team cause i dont care about hibs at all unless they are playing hearts.

same for us in that we couldnt beat all the bottom 6 and it has been an awful season, worst since tommy mclean but the fact that hibs fans base your achievements on we finished above hearts but got nothing, no eurpoe no nothing and it is still a success suggests to me that your goals are rather skewed for the so called flair team who are better than hearts at everything etc....only measure of success is if you finish above us.....

we do not have an extraordinary belief in romanov, get a f***ing grip...what choice do we have??? pieman...who sold tynie and would have us playing at murrayfield with NO season ticket holders etc i would rather we didnt have romanov but we do....and he is nuts.....but hibs fans believe his promises more than hearts fans do!!! i never once thought we would be winning the champs league!! the spl was possible but romanov blew that...but im a hearts fan and unless anybody has a spare 40m to buy him out...if he would even sell it anyway....at least ive seen my team lift a scottish cup...its what we do that i measure success on.....not where we are in relation to hibs. i supported hearts before vlad came along and my belief in them then was the same as it is now....you always start the season wanting to win as many games as possible...every season...makes no difference if you support spartans or hibs or hearts...you always believe in your team...otherwise whats the point?

That came off the back of Hearts fans going on about how they were the top dogs and how they had had a better season than Hibs. Lenny,

All true enough about the polish your points thing but come on dude the idiots that exist only to come on here under various different pseudos to have a dig at Hearts in an entirely humourless and uninteligent manner is unbelievable and despite not being on a Hibs thread for a very long time I can make a pretty informed guess that they don't receive nearly as much moron-traffic as we get.

Mixu= Child-like buffoon,
Riley= Just plain offensive and quite insane
Serg= Pretended he was a Lithuanian for two years
Denis= Ditto
Dublin= Everyday with an obsession with g1mp masks
Spook= Little girl throwing tantrums about a team with no connection to his own
Clones= Hilarious for about 0 seconds
Hobonomocists= Tireless workers of the financial industry who's sole job is to monitor the finances of the team across the city from their own in the hope that they can figure out the day of our demise.

With all these idiots about it is not a surprise that you will sometimes get (wrongly IMO) abused on a hearts thread as we simply have had enough of these cretins everyday trying to tell us about something we know all to well anyway... Like they are somehow enlightening us.

Add to this the fact that many of the f****s on the above list are certainly the samr person going to extraordinary lengths to claim to be other people and the picture just gets more incredible.

As I recall, when they defended us off the park 0-1 at ER, the week after we won the cup that the UBIG team have been too good to win since 1964, they wanted to book the open top bus and parade the 3 points along Gorgie Road. That was last season's highlight for them.

Look at the arithmetic under Mad Vlad's regime - 2nd to 4th to 8th to ?. Luckily they can't finish 16th next season, 12th is the best they can do.

but to ask us not to believe in our club is impossible...thats what being a supporter is all about...through thick and thin. i can only imagine the hibs reaction if all jambos said we have had enough...not supporting them anymore....if that is even possible to do....know i couldnt.

i dont mean to sound patronising but 22 in a row lasted for about 4/5 years when hibs didnt beat us

facts dictate that hearts are a more successful team as pointed out above. not that i really care about that as the mess we are in i do not even think about hearts.

Jamboy,

just had a look at a few recent Hibs threads and yes there are a few comments from Vic' etc but...

HONESTLY take a look at the Hearts threads from the last 2 months... Riley hamish?, SPL Fan, Dublin Hibs, the clones, Fake Lithuanians, Spook, etc, etc, etc...

No honest man can say that there is not an awful lot more imbeciles posting inappropriate and ignorant tosh on the hearts ones.

For the record the last time i was on a hibs thread as the Moth i just made a few points and argued or accepted the views of others, this is now nigh impossible on a hearts thread because of the morons infesting it (many of which don't even bother posting on the Hibs ones).

We have days where we lose two thirds of the thread because Riley/Dubs starts his little vendetta and implodes often taking a few of us with him when we have had enough of his cr4p and decend to not quite his level in responce.

Some days we even call off the insults and have a surreal debate about wildlife, indie music and alluring stunners... At this point it is quite a laugh but then up pops a Serg or a riley with some insult or other and it leaves you thinking "Jeez... These guys really have no life outside posting on there rival's threads" Now that is sad and certainly more pathetic than anything posted by hearts fans on a Hibs thread from the ones i have just scanned.

stll whatever floats your boat i 'spose eh?

"My club has no debt and a secure future. Couldn't give a flying duck if we don't win the SC for another 107 years, so long as it stays that way."

fair enough if that is how you feel but dosen't that mean you will be eternal also rans and infact not even be worth being in the league with such lack of ambition.

perhaps therein lies the true difference between how a Jambo and a Hibs fan thinks... The thought of accepting never competing for the league and the Scottish cup would be enough to make me lose all interest.

There was an article in the paper yesterday about prem clubs debt. I cant remember the exact figures but it was allong the lines of

Chelsea 700mill
Arsenal 300mill
Manu 400mill
Liverpool 160mill

Now before you go on about them being prem teams blah blah, the same rules for borrowing apply to us as they do to them. As long as the debt is sustainable and the repayments are met, you can actually go into a serious ammount of debt as proved above.

Hearts paltry 36mill (probably closer to 25 next year when player sales are taken into account) IS SERVICEABLE and we wont be going bust anytime soon.
We get asked where has the money gone, or its in Romanovs back pocket blah blah blah. Well funnily enough we have to sign players and pay them so thats a big chunk of the increased debt. We have also invested Millions into the new stadium even bfore a brick has been laid. Architects, designers, lawyers etc etc all need paid. Again an outlay not normal to a usual spl season so of course the figures are going to be worse.

We are in safe hands. Teams crap but that will change. Once the new stands up the increased revenue will service the debt further and in a few years we will be debt free, have a new manager and be playing in the champions league.

Seriously. We got it out of him the other night but EN pulled it. This bits actuallu quite funny. SOme of the sh1te he was talking was later used by Banderson as an exclusive!!! HAHA!! Scottish journalism at its best.

But yes he admitted that for the past 18 MOTHS!! He had been Anton/Serg pretending to be Lithuanian.

How sad and pathetic is that!!

i just can't honestly believe that someone could be anywhere near sad enough to go to such lengths! he even started by being all palsy with the Hearts fans and if you go back and look at these early posts you will even see him slagging off his own fellow Hibs fans saying that they are brain dead hobos and filth etc!!!

What kind of a sad little nutter would go to these lengths???

By the way dubs IS Riley Hamish/SPL in my opinion, I have been reading and comparing their posts for a wee while now and some of the similarities are staggering, words mispelt the same etc.

these guys are surely not right in the head... I just couldn't for one second imagine going to such lengths to make myself look stupid... Takes all sorts i spose though eh?

So then since serg' used to meet Denis socially are we to wait for denis' confession too or do we just laugh at him for another couple of months first?

liked post #82 by the way.

#80 Exactly. I have been posting rubbish on the hobo thread just like Bublin HFC does here.

His response is extremely amusing - he obviously doesn't realsie that my posts are identical to his....just a lot of cr*p. But because bublin and others do this on our threads I thought it was some game and that they must want us to post on the hibs threads.

Even more amusing, Bublin HFC usually responds with something about mothers/sisters or incestual jibes etc - 14 year old school boy comments, that must make him think he is funny / witty.

Fritzel's son I think!!

Sorry Dubs i will remain sceptical at least for now after the wee spelling thing.

many a school test is ripped up because someone has been acused of cheating... often caught out by two people getting the same questions wrong.

But you are CERTAIN?... the wee same mis-spelling was just a coincidence then?

Fair enough that is certainly possible but i just have a wee saying NEVER trust coincidences as they are VERY rare.

#88 If you remember, Dublin HFC was on here recently. There was no banter from him - he was intentionally trying to anger all Jambos on here. There was nothing funny about his posts and some were verging on abusive.

Well done Zenit - Rangers, their anti-fitba and their moronic bigoted backward fans were a disgrace to Scotland. Just as well they waved more UJacks than Saltires.

If that was no a hand ball, what is?

No, we won't grumble about the ref, unlike some Celtic fans, but on a level playing field it would have been 1-1.

A tight game. Could have gone either way (as I predicted). Rangers lost there way a bit for a short spell in the second half.

But that is football.

I said at work that Rangers fans had so far been carefully vetted for ticket distribution (hence the good record abroad) and that today the dregs that we all know really exist would descend on Manchester - UNVETTED. The real Gers fans would spring forth.
I added that a breakdown of large screens could set things off. Hell - I should have bought a lottery ticket rather than back the Russians to win 3-0.

Just watched the pictures of Manchester city centre with the riot police battling the Rangers fans and a good sized bunch of "Bears" belting the living daylights out of each other.Large fall out within the Rangers ranks. Thought the newscaster would be havering until I saw it.

AND I'M PLEASED AS F**** THAT THEY GOT STUFFED.
