THE nature of the opposition was moderate, and the margin of victory narrow, but Hearts' win over Hull City yesterday should still give their supporters cause for guarded optimism with the new SPL season just five days away.
This is not a squad which seems at all likely to challenge Rangers and Celtic for the top two places, but it is one which, after the major disappointment of last season, is at least headed in the right direction.

Granted, it would not take much to improve on the ill-disciplined and inconsistent performances which produced an eighth-place finish last year. Nonetheless, Csaba Laszlo, the new manager, is a methodical and demanding coach who promises to do a lot more than merely stabilise the club.

He knows he is short of a couple of quality signings, with an experienced striker being the most glaring need, but he is also willing to work hard with his present resources. In return, he expects his players to work hard too, and to maintain high levels of concentration from first to last.

The ability to remain switched on throughout a soporific encounter was one of the most important aspects of Hearts' win. Hull were creatively limited but a physically powerful side, and might just have punished any lapses. In the event, with the Hearts back four preventing them from getting too far forward, the Yorkshire team's best scoring opportunities came from long-range free-kicks.

That back four included Andrew Driver, who was filling in at left-back because of a minor injury to Lee Wallace. Ruben Palazuelos, who would have begun the match on the bench, took over Driver's position on the left of midfield. Palazuelos is far more of a holding midfielder than a wide player, but he showed some aptitude for the role by laying on the only goal of the game from close to the touchline.

That came with more than half an hour played, and allowed Audrius Ksanavicius to make amends for a miss in the seventh minute, when he shot wide from six yards out when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper after having been put through by Laryea Kingston. The Ghanaian was involved in the build-up to the goal as well, but the scoring chance was really brought about by Jason Thomson. The right-back's angled ball into the box dragged the Hull defence out of position, and when it was deflected back to Palazuelos, the Spaniard had time to look up and see Ksanavicius in an unmarked position on the edge of the six-yard box. Ksanavicius was one of the shortest men on the park, but the cross was perfectly placed and he was able to jump unchallenged and head home.

Hull had had their only real chance of the first half by then – a free-kick by Geovanni from more than 30 yards out which Steve Banks managed to stop. Their best chance of the second half was also a free-kick taken by the Brazilian, and on that occasion too Banks was equal to the threat.

Worryingly for a team about to embark on its first season in the Premiership, they were hardly able to create another opening after that second effort, and in the final half-hour of the game Hearts became more dominant without ever really threatening to inflict an embarrassing defeat on their visitors.

Both teams used a fair number of substitutes in the second half, the first change being the arrival of former Aberdeen striker Dean Windass up front for Hull. Hearts' first replacement actually gave their team a more natural look to it, with Johnny Brown coming on for Palazuelos and taking over at left-back, thus allowing Driver to resume his usual position further upfield.

The other debutant in the home side, Ryan Wallace, was given far less time in which to make an impression, as he came on for Kingston with only four minutes to go. Even so, he, like Brown, showed an encouraging willingness to take players on rather than merely making short, safe passes to senior colleagues.

Wallace came within a couple of feet of scoring in the dying stages of the game, but his shot was deflected wide of Boaz Myhill's goal. Neither he nor Brown can expect a long run in the first team just yet, but at least Laszlo knows they will not be overawed by the occasion if and when they are selected again.

As he prepares for the visit of Motherwell, the manager also knows his preferred starting 11. Indeed, his intention was probably to field it from the start yesterday, with only the injury to Lee Wallace preventing him from doing so.

Having finished third in the SPL last season, Motherwell are likely to provide a tougher test for Hearts than did Hull, who are still a fortnight away from playing their first competitive match.

We will thus have a far clearer indication after that opening league match of just how much real improvement Laszlo has been able to make. For the moment, though, the early signs are encouraging.

Hearts: Banks, Thomson (Ivaskevicius 80), Zaliukas, Berra, Driver (Cesnauskis 88), Kingston (R Wallace 86), Jonsson (Karipidis 58), Stewart, Palazuelos (Brown 47), Ksanavicius (Mikoliunas 71), Mole (Makela 79). Subs not used: MacDonald, Rapnik, McGowan.

Hull City: Myhill, Dawson (Cooper 85), Ashbee (France 85), Turner, Barmby (Halmosi 63), Geovanni (Garcia 67), Folan (Windass 46), Boateng (Fagan 59), Ricketts, Marney (Hughes 80), Gardner. Subs not used: Duke, Doyle.

Organisation and team spirit cheer new manager, but room to improve

CSABA Laszlo's first match at Tynecastle ended in victory, but the new Hearts manager was in no mood to get carried away. The lacklustre nature of the opposition may have had something to do with that, but Laszlo is also aware that his team have a long way to go.

Indeed, while clearly pleased to have beaten Hull City thanks to a first-half goal from Audrius Ksanavicius, the former Ferencvaros and Uganda manager felt it was as important to stress what went wrong as to dwell on what went right.

"I'm happy about the result, it's OK, it gives confidence," he said. "But I saw a lot of mistakes.

"I'm very happy about the team spirit and discipline. In some positions we have work to do, but with the team spirit and organisation I am very happy."

Laszlo has said before he would like to strengthen his squad with a new goalkeeper and an experienced striker, and when asked to specify what kind of mistakes had disappointed him he highlighted an early miss by Ksanavicius. "For example in the first half we had a chance and I'm unhappy we didn't score," he said.

"That was the big problem in the pre-season, that we didn't score. We need a new striker, one who can lead the team and score. Jamie Mole, Juho Makela and Gary Glen are good strikers, but we need more experience. We need more killer instinct. At the moment we have to work harder in this department."

Laszlo knows he does not have millions at his disposal, but he appeared unsure about even a modest budget when asked to rate his chances of bringing in new players before the season kicks off. "I don't know at the moment how much money is in my account, but I think it's not enough," he explained. "At the moment I think about the players I have.

"We have a lot of work to do. But the important thing is to know we have potential. We must build a team. We must build confidence in the team. We can have a successful year."

Given his belief in hard work and attention to detail, the manager's answer when asked what he was most pleased in came as no surprise. "We had 90 minutes of concentration. This is very good and what we want," he concluded.

Losing 1-0 and hardly creating a scoring chance must have been far from what Phil Brown wanted from his visit to Edinburgh, but the Hull manager did not appear too despondent afterwards. "There were one or two positives and one or two negatives," he said. "The bottom line is pre-season friendlies are not about results, they're about fitness. Today we lacked punch in the final third, but we had that in the first ten or 12 games of last season too."

That slow start, however, was in the Championship. If they begin their first Premiership campaign in like manner, they could be trailing behind the rest of the field before the clocks go back.

Brown said his team improved when they brought on former Aberdeen player Dean Windass. "I thought we showed a little bit of a lack of intelligence in the first half," added the Hull manager. "We condensed the space when we were attacking.

"Bringing on the old war horse at half-time helped us stretch them a bit, he pulled off the defenders' shoulders to create space.

"The final third is a little bit of a problem, we have only threatened from long-range free-kicks and follow-ups."

Solid considering we still lack firepower up front. Strong in goal, central defence and midfield. Full-back positions still dodgy but good to see the young lads doing so well. Need two strikers though - one goal poacher and one target man. Laszlo's doing well considering the state the team was in when he arrived and how little time he's had.

Happy to get a result, but feeling more and more like we wont be getting a new striker, and Romanov just wants miracles with the quad we already have.

Still hoping for something to eventuate on the Riordan front.

With regards to the "DEEK RIORDAN" signing - He was at Easter rd - to support Hibs - Even Mixu said that "DEEK was just here To Watch Hibs - as he IS A Hibs Fan "

I think that was a sign

The Little "Hibee" is Going To ride His Celtic Contract out - and leave for the weegies fer NOWT - Just like he did to Hibs - aye

#3 Riorden to Hearts for a year or two would be a sensible move for him. He's guaranteed a game, can get back on track and would earn good money. It's such a sensible move that of course he won't do it. He's a Hibee, but unlike John Robertson who saw the light and managed to combine being a Hibee with scoring bucketloads against them as it was good for his career, Riorden would rather waste another year of a short career than go to Hearts. He's going to do a Burchill or Creaney and fade fast without achieving anything unless he does something about it now.

Good result for Hearts this one.

What I really want to know is, How did all those Hibs fans get their hands on tickets behind the Hearts dugout? I thought that was where Home support usually sat???

Never mind, I'll just get on with 'bricking it' eh?

Watched this game on Setanta. I was surprised that the crowd was reported as 5000 - the stadium looked almost empty. Maybe the management included all season ticket holders in that number.

Regarding the game itself. Hull were awful and Hearts only a shade better. If, as we have been told repeatedly this last 2 weeks, pre-season game are a good indicator, then Hull will be relegated by Christmas.

#14 There is nothing Neutral or objective about anything you post.Tynecastle with 5 000 in it is 'almost empty'.
HEARTS were significantly better than a shade better than awfull. They were better than a EPL side;passed the ball better, fitter, better organised and with with more 'flair'. Kingston stood out and demonstrated that he is easily good enough to play with anyone in the UK(outwith the top four in England).
Long way to go(desperately need to sign a goalscorer) but vastly improved from last season.

Thought Hearts played with a level of discipline that was missing last season. Kingston is a very good player. Agree with talk o the Toun at #15, that a goalscorer needs to be recruited.

I think what Hearts can take from the game is both the victory, which is always good for the confidence levels, and a degree of satisfaction that there seems to be an organiser at he helm again.

Stating the obvious I know, but the rebuilding is still a work in progress, and there may still be one or two disappointing results for the Jambo's early season, but no doubt by Xmas Hearts will be well into their stride and as the momentum gathers, games at Tynecastle will be played out in front of a passionate and noisy support which could prove difficult for opposing teams.

Only remaining question is;

Will Vlad leave the guy alone to continue with his development of the staff and playing style?

This week is the real test now for Romanov. Casaba has stated publicly we are short up front and players in that role are expensive. Let's see if Romanov digs deep and supports his manager. It's going well on surface, some confidence that getting on track, but Romanov needs to convert some of his rhetoric into investment in quality playing staff.

But your point is well made: we need to see some action from Romanov in providing better players.

Morning CJ, lets not forget mate that Hibs had a blistering preseason last year, comprehensively beating two premiership teams.
Throughout that we were told by Hearts fans that we had sold the family silver ware and were heading for a fall...
The same as happened at Tynecastle now. You have lost pretty much all of the good players you have had for the last few years and are replacing them with youngsters who may or may not turn out good in return.
You also have boss that seems to have instilled a bit of pride back into the team but that may prove to be a false dawn again.
The level of investment in your side is absolutely equivalent to ours i.e. nowt, zip, zero. SO the squad you've got now will be pretty much the squad you have this season...
While I realise my boys are in a right mess too, no-one from the green side of the city is anything other than realistic about it...

You may still end up as porcelain gods is all I'm saying

Hull would certainly wipe the floor with Kaunas, and I suspect give Raith a serious doing, so by default Pundit, I think you've given us a fair indication of what level Rsangers are currently performing at.

Anyway, rather than make snide comments about Hearts, I would love to hear your views on Rangers' pre season, and also your thoughts on Kenny Miller's scoring rate, since I clearly recollect you telling us how he'd be banging them in due to his work on the training ground with "Ally".

Only 2 decent sides played in pre season, Liverpool and Schalke, no goals scored by Rangers. I'd be worried about Kaunas, and even more concerned about Aalborg should you make it through.

Give us the pundit's prediction of how many points Rangers will have after 4 games in the SPL. Falkirk, Celtic and Aberdeen away, and Hearts at home. I reckon 7 at best, what say you?
21

twists'n'turns,

04/08/2008 08:16:21

I think young Glen will score goals but not as a lone striker. Nade when fit is good at holding ball and taken on defences and would bak up Glen. However Glen may be too young to play every match. I still believe another strong ball holding supporting striker needed who is good in air and a natural goal scorer needed. Also like to see more goals from mid field. However where do we pick up a good striker without paying the earth.I think Romanov and co are looking at available out of contract players.

I know we won't get Riordan for nothing but if he did sign would it be to play for Hearts or for the money. Would his heart be in it. He can get goals.

No surprises that there is no posting allowed on the RANKGERS 0 LIVERPOOL 4 story, due to the amount of sectarian abuse you lot throw at each other.

so bitter because Riorden wont sign for you?

Hearts quite possibly dont need a disruptive influence like Riorden in their dressing room at present to be honest.

This is why he has been shunted into the reserves at Celtic, he wont do what he's told and his mouth rattles off like a gattling gun at every opportunity.

Its quite sad really because he is a great talent who is chucking his career away by having a bad attitude.

Although he's probably doing it a little bit of good by not signing for Hearts.

I agree they'll have 7 points too.

Falkirk - Rankgers win
Celtic - Celtic Win
Aberdeen - Draw
Hearts - Rankgers win (naturally)

I'm in wind up mode this morning unless you hadnt already noticed.

BTW will you stop blowing your own trumpets about beating Hull because they're EPL opposition? Quite possibly a team that will turn out to have a worse record than Derby did last season. Hardly world beaters guys and most unlikely to trouble the Man Utds, Chelseas fot his world wouldnt you say. EPL team waiting to become a non descript championship side next season.

21# Pat. What you are missing is that refusing to sell top players is effectively investment in the team. Hearts turned down 1.75M for Berra and 850K for Driver. This is the same as buying players of the same value (assuming that you rate the player) - except that you don't pay the VAT. Same applies to Fletcher - if he is worth £2M, then by not selling, Petrie has effectively "bought" a £2M striker.

If you see anyone jumping off a bridge today chances are they'll be a rearrangerz fan.

It just gets better and better : the Celts steam roll over Feyenoord in Rotterdam whilst the rearrangerz get pulverised at Ibrox.

Walter and his sorry excuse for a team will head out to Lithuania today , their heads still hanging in shame from Saturday's brisk dismantlement...even the daily rearranger had to conceed that Liverpool treated the match like a training session bringing on several fringe players at half time before humping rearrangerz senseless.

4 in a row for sure, and the Kaunas camp must be fancying their chances of getting a result against this collection of dumplings.

I tend to agree with those who say Hull are not a great EPL Side, they are not and even Hull supporters (I know quite a few of them) are saying they fear for their club. They were promoted a season or two too early in their building work. But a win is a win although as I keep saying these games are not really an indicator as to how the seaon will go. Lets judge the team on its performance when the season starts.

Someone on here has said Hull could even beat the record set by Derby last season for low points and I am with that one.

We watched Hibs v Hull last year so didnt want to watch our own team play them, you know? ;o)

Either that or after seeing us against Barca last year, Hibees decided they would make it an annual thing to go to a Hearts pre season game. That was why it looked empty, Hibs fans often dress up as empty seats

It was only Hull, even though they're an EPL team, Hibs didnt attract huge numbers for Boro.

Think we're all sick of being ripped off for meaningless pre season games.... but if was against Barca again the numbers would have been bigger.

We'll see how our attendances compare when the real games start (especially semi finals :0))

Dickov may be worth considering. Not Lovell, but finding a half decent striker here without paying over the odds is slim. Even English championship transfer fees are crazy. So we look to see who is available and better than who we have in this country. Then we have to look further afield, maybe Africa or possibly CL has contacts still in Hungary

Do you know that most Scottish football fans do not even bother reading stories about Hertz and Heebs. They are an irrelevance, and both would struggle in the third tier of English football. The breakdown of the SPL in terms of English football is:

1 Aberdeen - English League 1
2 Celtic - Championship
3 Dundee Utd - English League 1
4 Falkirk - English League 2
5 Hamilton - Conference
6 Hearts - English League 1
7 Hibernian - English League 1
8 Inverness - CT Conference
9 Kilmarnock - English League 2
10 Motherwell - English League 1
11 Rangers - Premiership(top 6)
12 St Mirren - English League 2

Good result, though Hull must be the worst EPL team that I have seen.
Key man was Kingston (I thought). Hearts need to keep him fit and motivated. PS I thought he was leaving this summer?

#54 Aye right. Bitter wee Rangers fan. Looks like the Tic are pumping yous again these season eh.

Hope everyone lumped on the pool at the weekend. 10/11? Keane and Torres vs. Weir and broadfoot? That was only gonna end one way.

License to print money.

Can see Rangers dropping a lot of points this season. Starting at Falkirk.

Another dribbling Ger. I live in England and not interested in football here. How many Scots fans really give a hoot about English football. So you say Celtic couldn't beat sides in lower half of English Premier but Rangers (0-4 Liverpool) could. Possibly financially you are right about the rest of the clubs but we can only judge on playing comparisons if and when they meet up and that is in friendlies or possibly European matches. So Kaunus also good enough for English Premier. They held mighty Rangers at Ibrox.

Lots of guys taking their kids to the Festival Parade. Lots of wives demanding a last sacrifice on a Sunday before the season begins. Lots of folk just not coming along for what was effectively a training game shown on Setanta!

Does that answer your question, Soutra John?

Messi and Van Nistelroy will play for Hearts before the said Deeks..

Now get back into that time bubble and dream of finishing in the top 6 for a change.

I think you are looking at Hertz through Setanta tinted spectacles. They are a rank rotten wee team owned by the Lithuanian version of Robert Maxwell. The property slump may well mean that Hertz are stuck with him for another few years until he can get the best return for the flats he is going stick up when he gets the go ahead to demolish the ground. Altogether now!

#49 The reason there is no OF forum, is that they quickly degenrate into neanderthal type slagging matches with both sides droning on about Irish history and spouting ignorant abuse. That type of thing is fine for an editorial in the Daily Rioter or some other weegie rag but not in Scotland's national newspaper.

#NB watched a ESPN programme on Celtic/Rangers over the weekend..... camera crew on the rangers supporters bus/with them after the game....... total emrarresment to Scotland.
Rangers in the premiership.... the English quite rightly would not soil their hands.

i always want the Scottish team to win in europe but will make an exception for Kaunas game. Nothing to do with them being HEARTS feeder everything to do with Scotlands shame.

At the Liverpool game on Saturday, their fans were lapping up every minute of the dam busters theme, theme form the Great escape, simply the best and the other Rangers anthems. Rangers would be welcomed into a British league with open arms, after all the are the quintessential British club.

I see the wicked sense of humour is still alive and kicking in Liverpool.....

The after match interview between Chico and Wattie was even funnier.....

Kaunus still think it will be a tough match regardless of the humping Rangers received....bwhahahahahah....

The air feed for breathing in a Space Suit is fed in through the helmet, which is hermitically sealed from the rest of the suit. Air is vented into the rest of the suit to maintain temperature, not for breathing. Therefore your joke was not only pointless and unfunny; It also showed a basic misunderstaning of the subject matter.

when i was watching the game yesterday online some 200+ were watching it the feed was being done by a lpool fan, many in the room were English, do you know not one of them wants either of the OF in England, and do you know what the first things they said about them were, Vile, repulsive, thugs, bigotted.

Not that it matters anyway neither Rangers or Celtic will ever play in Englang, the quicker the morons that follow these club realise this the better. FIFA & UEFA have both said they WILL NEVER santion a move. Even if they ever went back on their word then there is still the problem of how do they qualify to play in Europe? Had Cardiff won the FA cup they would not have been allowed into the UEFA because they come under a different FA, in another country. European places are only for English FA clubs.

Get used to it OF fans your pipe dream of playing in the EPL will never happen. The best you or anyone could hope for would be a British cup, in which you wouldnt be the only teams from Scotland taking part

Why is anyone even bothering to talk Rangers with these guys? Who cares... Blank them and they will soon find someone else to bore with their banal 'weegie banter'... They have a picture of the queen on their dressing room wall... this tells me everything i ever need to know about how hilarious these sad, narrow minded little soap-dodgers are.

For god's sake can the Scotsman not just open up a thread for them so that ours don't get dragged into the gutter via their dull and tedious bleating.
