CHRISTOS KARIPIDIS is expected to meet senior Hearts officials in the next 48 hours in an attempt to settle his future.
The defender is receptive to advances from Greek club PAOK Salonika, who sold him to Tynecastle two years ago for £200,000. They now want him back and he is keen to discuss the matter with the Hearts hierarchy in the hope of reaching an amicable resolution.

PAOK are willing to hand the 25-year-old a four-year contract with his current deal due to expire next summer, however the clubs have yet to agree on a transfer fee with Hearts demanding 300,000 euros (£240,000]. The Edinburgh club also hope to include a 50 per cent sell-on clause as part of any prospective deal.

Karipidis has been used sparingly by manager Csaba Laszlo during pre-season matches and, with his wife and baby daughter staying at the family home in Salonika, he may ask to return to his native Greece.

Suffered from being played at right-back. Looked decent as a centre-back... Will be missed more than Gonzo though in my opinion.

Woudnt be bothered if we sold him, rather have a new half decent Centre Back with experience to work with and give more experience to Berra.

i hope he stays. he is no superstar, but he is pretty decent - and can play at right back too if need be.

if not, it only leaves zaliukas, berra and rapnik as the centre half options.

Newcastle Jambo,

Crazy decision. If they could get the big money they are getting for Gonzo that would be understandable but this is a decent player who is reliable and we are selling him for £200k on the eve of the new season with no replacement brought in. Inexplicable.

Stotty,

#4 - So you suggest forcing an unhappy player to stay at the club?

If wants to leave, I'd let him go. It seems Laszlo prefers Zaliukas (who was much improved V Hull) and we have the likes of McGowan, Sives & Rapnik who are all promising young centre halves. I'd still like to see us bring in a dominating centre half though, someone in the Balde mould.

#4 I agree with you in principle (and still think we were sold down the river with Velicka) but if he is hankering after getting back to Greece for personal reasons then there seems little point in keeping an unsettled player in Edinburgh. But we will need an experienced central defender to be brought in.

I see this as a move by Hearts to clear the decks of players in the squad to allow Csaba to bring in his "own" players. With Jose Concalves already away, Karapdis will also be surplus with the work permit being approved for David Obua.

CBJambo,

Shame to see he wants a move home... he was without doubt the best partner for Berra at CB... more reliable than big Zal. He also started to chip in with a couple of goals here and there.

It's understandable tho if he has a young family and they are back home... must be tough.

I understand Shabba prefers him to Zaliukas but it is inevitable that we'll lose him.

Sorry to see a player who was improving go, but wish him all the best anyway.

One thing I liked about him especially was that he played his game with a passion... a player other team mates should take notes from!!

Now if we could just get rid of Beslija!

#9 I agree with you. We shouldn't forget that Berra (despite being captain) is also young and relatively inexperienced. I'd love to have seen Pressley back as player /assistant manager but that was never going to happen sadly.

if he's set on going home then we simply cannot stand in his way.

to him i would say please stay and try to make a go of it for another season. get your family over to stay with you.

if he goes then i wish him all the best.

Sticking my head above the parapit again, but I'd be very happy with Zally returning to the form of the year before. I think he's the better of the 2. Nothing against Karipidis but I see him more as cover.
Leaves us exposed though if Thomson picks up a niggle, I believe Ivaskevicius will be the cover until Rob gets his moonboat amputated.

#12 Unlike others, I always feel that way when players leave. I would always wish them all the best - including Webster who was a great Hearts player for several years and chose to move on at the end of his contract - no problem.

Why supporters almost always boo former players is beyond me. Scott Severin is a good example. A good player and a Hearts man through and through who was not offered a new contract simply to save wages under the Pieman regime. He had no choice but to find employment elsewhere and yet gets booed everytime he comes to Tynecastle. That's the mentality of most football supporters of all persuasions I suppose.

Jamboy,,

Edinburgh 07/08/2008 13:11:58
I have slated Ketstutis more than any other player ever to pull on a Hearts jersey (Well since eskilsson or brian Hamilton) but I have not ever booed him... i have called him all kinds of colourfull things under my breath but stopped short of booing him.

He looks like he has skill though and if ever i wanted to be proved spectacularly wrong about a player then it is him... i would be delighted if he turned out to be a decent wingback.

Totally disagree about webster and i hope... nay pray to all the possible gods available that after his suspicious Rangers transfer that he is binned by rangers in their much reported imminent cull and then turns his career around at a club down south, perhaps in the Championship.

He was a great defender and will be an asset to scotland... But the way those parasitic swine went about capturing him makes me sick and i hope that he never kicks another ball for rangers.

#14 NJ, i don't know if you're at a wind-up by to say that webster left at the end of his contract is simply ridiculous.

he used a loophole to leave before the end of his contract.

the ungrateful whelp turned his nose up to a £12K per week contract offer and was dropped from the side, rightly or wrongly. he then proceeded to throw his toys around.

he was undoubtedly tapped up by rangers when they bid £1M for him at the beginning of vlad's involvement with hearts. the whole sorry, stinking saga smacks of underhand collision between the player, his agent, rankers, wigan & jjb sports.

he deserves everything he gets.

#14 Think it's because EU Bosman ruling that effectively broke the player/club loyalty thing. Players will look out for themselves and will play the system while clubs will punt players on while they can still make a bob or two on them. Third party are the fans who have still not caught up on the real politik of the situation and regard any player moving under his own steam as a deserter.

Got to be a two way thing though and we live without former players flaunting their new badge in front of their ex-team's fans. A bit of respect on both sides would be a good thing.
19

GrahamH,

Edinburgh 07/08/2008 13:24:08
Always thought he was solid, at £200k who will replace him for this season?
20

Newcastle Jambo,

#18 That's a good, well-balanced viewpoint.

I had sympathy with Webster - I know it's an unpopular view. He stated he was happy to stay at Hearts for the final year of his contract and wanted to play. Because he wouldn't be coerced into signing a new contract that he didn't want to honour he was dropped and told he would never play for Hearts again. I can't blame him for (a) wanting to leave, especially in light of everything we now know that was going re. team selection etc and (b) invoking a UEFA rule that got him out of a terrible situation. I've always wished him all the best.

#18 is right, fans have not caught up with the reality of modern football. Neither has Romanov.

Webster shafted Hearts. End of. We brought him from Arbroath, developed him from a rabbit in the headlights, into an accomplished international player, paying him a substantial salary, and how did he he repaid us ?? by allowing his head to be turned by a Duddy of an agent. If he had signed the new contact as Romanov wanted, he would either be still playing for both Hearts and Scotland, probably as Hearts captain, or else he would have moved for the kind of transfer fee that would have justified the outlay and effort Hearts put into him. Don't always agree with Vlad's ideas, but he was spot on there. Hopefully Webster will continue to pick up injuries and never play again, then he can reflect on what might have been if he had had a better agent !!!
22

Jambo-ree,

#20 Thanks for that but don't want you thinking I'm onside with the Webster saga as he slithered through a loophole. This stunk to high heaven (still does) as to a lesser degree did the Velicka business. And we all know what the common denominator is....

I agree with #21 Jambo 58, although maybe not to the extent that hopefully he'll continue to pick up injuries and never play again. Seems a wee bit harsh, maybe just get's a bad case of the claps and signs for East Fife!!!
25

Stotty,

07/08/2008 13:55:03
Newcastle Jambo - you're post about Severin is incorrect. Severin turned down a new deal with Hearts citing the fact he wanted to move down south. No clubs down south wanted him, he then came back to Hearts with his tail between his legs, but by that time the contract on offer was no longer on the table. He ended up signing for Aberdeen.

That's no' very fair on East Fife, they've never done anything that badly wrong to deserve Judas !!!!
28

Newcastle Jambo,

#25 Fair enough. Craig Levein initially had to tell him he couldn't increase his wages on a new deal though didn't he? You can't blame him for trying to increase his earnings and I'm sure Craig Levein advised him to do that himself. As someone whose career was cut short he knows that players need to chase the best deals now in this post-Bosman world.

I just hate the "all Hearts players good", "all ex-Hearts players bad" mentality.

OK, here's my ex-Jambos still playing elsewhere dream team for the day:

1. Gordon
2. Maybury
3. Naismith
4. Pressley
5. Severin
5. Webster
7. Velicka
8. Brellier
9. Bednar
10. Hartely
11. Skacel

I don't live in the past, I don't. Really.

Looks like Webster has found his true level, cleaning Davie Weir's boots!

Like a lot of Scottish players who are lured by the Ugly Sisters, they become a mere shadow of their former selfs. Webster has joined that 'illustrious' band.

NJ, i can see why you take a bit of abuse from time to time. your misrepresentation of the circumstances of webster and severin leaving hearts does you no favours whatsoever. i don't know if it's borne out of you not being in full receipt of the facts or something else.

what i do believe is that you still have an agenda against romanov and it's clouding your judgement.

31

Stotty,

07/08/2008 14:24:36
#28 - I think it's natural for ex-players to get stick, especially if they wanted to leave the club, as Seve said he did. As it happens, I don't recall Seve getting a particularly hard time whenever he's been back at Tynie since.

What about Obua, can't he play at centre back?

I think with the amount of debt we have any cash coming in has to be taken! Seems like Vlad has seen at least a little bit of sense at last after the last three years of madness!
