MIXU PAATELAINEN today insisted Swedish boss Magnus Haglund was fooling no-one by claiming Hibs were favourites to dump his side IF Elfsborg out of the InterToto Cup.
Elfsborg confirmed their place in the second round of the competition with a 4-1 aggregate win over HB Torshavn of the Faroe Islands – but could only manage a no-scoring draw in the second leg at their own Boras Arena.

And, although his side are second in the Allsvenskan having lost just once in 11 matches while Hibs, who will be at home in the first leg on Sunday, are only a week into pre-season training, Haglund claimed the Easter Road outfit are a bigger club playing in a stronger league.

He said: "It might be an advantage we are already into our season but Hibs are a good team and Scottish football is ranked higher than our Swedish game.

"Money-wise Hibs are also bigger than Elfsborg so they should have more quality players and that's why I think they are favourites."

Haglund's words, however, cut no ice with Paatelainen who pointed out that, having won the first leg in the Faroe Islands the previous week, Elfsborg had fielded a shadow side at the weekend.

Predicting a much stronger Elfsborg team – and one which will include Sweden's Anders Svensson for a start – on Sunday, Paatelainen said: "They'd done the hard work in the Faroes and I'd expect we'll see a full-strength side in Edinburgh, the one that played at the weekend bore no resemblance to their strongest team.

"I honestly don't think his comments are justified, Elfsborg are riding high in their League, they played in the group stages of the UEFA Cup last season, something we have not done, they have players who have played in the English Premiership which we don't have and, as for Scottish football being better, which nation was at Euro 2008? Elfsborg are also ready to play, they are mid-way through their season, they'll be ready to play on Sunday, whereas our boys have had a week of very heavy work and will work hard again this week."

Asked if he thought Haglund was attempting to play mind-games, Paatelainen replied: "He won't affect my mind."

Paatelainen was more inclined to believe that, even having fielded an under-strength side, Elfsborg had simply had a bad game, a notion to which even Haglund seemed to subscribe saying: "I can't tell you for sure why we didn't perform. In fact, I'm a little confused. Our passing game was too slow, we didn't create too many chances, didn't score any goals and the performance was not our best."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen today brushed off renewed speculation over the future of striker Clayton Donaldson, who is said to be interesting both Darlington and Crewe after the former York City frontman found himself falling down the pecking order at Easter Road.

The Hibs boss said: "That's all it is, speculation. There's nothing happening."

I dont know , at least theres something to play for in the 1st Division.

The Iter Teeny Totty Cup just sounds like a waste of resources.

ah, ye of little minds! like I care what a Hibs fan thinks of Dundee in the 1st. I do care on the other hand about the state of the SPL and given the usual failings of Hibs/Hearts and the current signings by the OF it looks for very much 'as you were' this season. Something has to happen to change the picture otherwise utter tedium beckons.

I hope none of the Hibs players are reading this - Mixu's basically made a strong case for them to not even bother turning up!

Mixu's last 3 words there could easily sum up our styleof play under him...there's nothing happening is right.

the dundee fan was spot on as well, the SPL is tedious and predictable with borderline bent refereeing favouring Scotland's shame and Smeltic.

We will get humped by Elfsborg.

When was the SPL anything other than predictable and boring? A nice cosy 12 team league makes sure of this!

Dundee spent outwith their means to try and make an impact in our League. Look where that got you.

Positive thinking, eh? Yes, we might gat humped and if we do, then it'll be by a team which is clearly quite good. However, we might just win.........

I'd expect Mixu to start bringing the players that he wants in now. Most other managers have spoken about how quiet the transfer market has been due to the Euro's and now that they're over, I'd expect that we'll see some new faces at ER over the next week or so.

Oh aye, and your point about the SPL being tedious? What, whilst the circus across town rumbles on? Nah, anything but tedious.

it's an awfy job hibs can't go about their preperations for the season ahead, without putting up with negative garbage from fans of other clubs who are not much, if at all better than ours.the old rirm are a given, we can't live with them, but everyone else, including us will be playing catch up again next season.the old firm always take points off everyone and end up streaking ahead.until hibs, hearts, dundee utd, aberdeen and motherwell can get some real ambition, the s.p.l will be an old firm 1,2 for a long time yet.

#14 you can't really argue with the OF, but taking stick from the other also-rans in our league is a joke.

I hope we do well, and hope Mixu's done his homework.

Some new faces would benefit us, but too late for this methinks.

Agree with all the comments suggesting nothing is happening. How much would it cost to extend Deano's contract, re-sign Ivan and Deek Riordan?
No need to go down the Hearts debt route or break our wage structure when signing on fees could be used as an enticement. For perhaps a couple of million we could have the feelgood factor back.
Something must be done at Easter Road if season tickets are to be sold and interest in our great club is to be maintained. The atmosphere surrounding the club just now is similar to the late 70s, early eighties when earlier success was followed by sterile failure.
C'mon the cabbage!
