LANG LANG
Nigel Hess Concerto For Piano And Orchestra
***
UCJ 1774850, £8.99
Lang Lang's journey to the dark side is at last complete: he's started channelling Liberace, just as composer Nigel Hess appears to be channelling Rachmaninov in this concerto.
There's undoubted brilliance here, eager as Hess is to allow Lang Lang to demonstrate running up and down the keyboard with lots of pounding of notes against a lushly romantic strings and horns background.
Quiet reflections follow before we're back to Rachmaninovian grandeur, now with half-pauses to indicate we're being meaningful and dark.
This is flashy, highly coloured and perhaps ultimately heartless.
