THE JOE ASCIONE QUARTET
Movin' Up!

***

Arbors Records 19359, £14.99

American drummer Ascione doubles as leader in this laid-back, unpretentious CD, which features a handful of his favourite musicians – clarinettist Allan Vaché, pianist/vibraphonist John Cocuzzi and bassist Frank Tate – playing an imaginative 11-track selection ranging from classic Cole Porter to Lennon and McCartney's 'Norwegian Wood'. The arrangements bring a freshness to even the most familiar tunes, and Vaché and Cocuzzi make for an exciting front line.
