PAUL ASCIAK
Portrait ***

MSM0009, £8.99

The professional career of the Maltese tenor Paul Asciak lasted barely a decade before he retired to teach and coach; one of his few professional recordings came in his mid-sixties while visiting Poland, when called upon to sing Otello at a dress rehearsal in the place of a missing tenor.

While these off-stage recordings might lack studio quality, the energy and enthusiasm is unmistakable. Asciak's voice is of the powerful, back-of-the-theatre variety, with enough subtlety to make you willing to forgive the occasional glissando and not always perfect intonation. A CD full of surprises.
