A BRITISH composer has declared himself bankrupt after unsuccessfully suing a newspaper which gave him a bad review.
Neil Burstein’s opera Manifest Destiny was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2005.
London Evening Standard critic Veronica Lee wrote afterwards: “I found the tone depressingly anti-American and the idea that there is anything heroic about suicide bombers is, frankly, a grievous insult.”
He ran up £67,000 legal costs, arguing readers would believe he applauded suicide bombers.
However, Lord Justice Walker, after seeing the opera, said it was “plainly anti-American”.
