SAMBA'S SCOTTISH AFRICAN PARTY ***
THE JAZZ BAR (VENUE 57)
SENEGALESE singer Samba Sene knows how to create a good dance party. Since he came to Scotland eight years ago he has built up his band, Diwan, bringing together musicians with an African groove in their soul. While West African mbalax rhythms may be Diwan's touchstone, there are touches of Zimbabwean jit and South African jive in a set that has the small dancefloor here heaving.
Following the tradition of his homeland, songs such as Keman, Alone, Yaye Anna and Mayla, Sene's homage to women of the world, are inspired praise tributes.
His rich voice alternates with saxophonist Doug Tiplady (from New Zealand) playing out jazz-funk over rolling bass from Akin Farumbi and spicy guitar riffs from John Walsh, with Stuart Dinwoodie throwing in percussion and ngoni. With various guests expected to join Diwan on stage this month, this is a great late-night gig.
• Until 23 August. Tomorrow 7:30pm
