Regular readers will know of this magazine's affection for the Bongo's cabaret, a mix of theatre, burlesque, music and more from across the Fringe. While it can be as hit-and-miss as any festival cabaret, the Bongo has good taste, so at least one mindblowing act tends to be guaranteed.

PAUL HAIGCABARET VOLTAIRE, 7pm
A bit of pop history. Paul Haig was once frontman of cult Scottish band Josef K, who released just one album on Scottish indie label Postcard (home also to Orange Juice and Aztec Camera) but were a huge influence on younger Scottish bands such as Franz Ferdinand. He's now playing his first live dates in years, including this festival show.

The Spiegel Garden is being cautious in its programming this year, mostly concentrating on short runs of concerts by returning favourites. If it makes the venue feel less exciting than usual, at least you know you're in safe hands – particularly with these rocket-fuelled hillbillies.
