Celtic 2 Rangers 4

RANGERS boss Walter Smith hopes Kenny Miller's Old Firm double has finally silenced the critics who have refused to accept him since his return to Ibrox.

However, the former Scotland manager conceded that there are probably sections of the Rangers
support that his hitman will never win over, no matter how many he scores against their bitter rivals.

The former Celtic striker, who is back for his second spell with Rangers, has been targeted by the boo boys in pre-season and the opening games of the new SPL campaign, but hit home twice as his side eased their biggest victory at Parkhead in 15 years.

Daniel Cousin and Pedro Mendes were also on the scoresheet as Smith's men recorded a comfortable 4-2 win over Gordon Strachan's side, who hit the back of the net through Georgios Samaras and Shunsuke Nakamura.

Mendes' strike in particular was a thing of beauty, but Miller's goals were the only talking point on an electric afternoon in the east end of Glasgow as he made Celtic pay on his return to Parkhead.

Smith was clearly delighted with the result and to see the player break his scoring duck in the best possible way, saying: "I thought that Kenny played well. It seems to be the case quite often in football that people score against their old clubs.

"Fortunately for us that proved to be the case. It doesn't bother me who scores, as long as we get the right result, but Kenny played well.

"If his performance against Celtic didn't win some people over then they have got a problem; I don't know what he would need to do. But, he has got his first goal out of the way now so hopefully he can go on and get a few more as the season goes on.

"I was pleased with the overall performance – anyone who goes to Parkhead and scores four goals is doing very well."

Smith had surprised the majority inside Parkhead with his decision to start out-of-favour Gabon striker Daniel Cousin alongside Miller, while Kris Boyd was left out of the side altogether – and the move paid dividends with both players netting. The Ibrox side's opener came eight minutes before the break when Cousin beat Mark Wilson all ends up and cut in towards Boruc's goal before finishing from what had looked an impossible angle.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the visiting players and supporters, but their lead lasted just over a minute before parity was restored. Aiden McGeady swung the ball into the box that was nodded on and Sasa Papac blundered when his mis-hit clearance fell straight to Samaras, who didn't need to be asked twice to rifle the ball home from just outside the six yard box.

Honours even at the break was probably about right, but after the restart Rangers really turned the screw, moving back in front in 52 minutes and it was a goal that will no doubt live long in the memory for Miller.

He got the better of the Parkhead defence when he latched on to a ball in from the left from Charlie Adam at the back post, hitting a superb right-foot volley across Boruc and into the net. The former Derby hitman wheeled away in delight and was smothered by his team-mates as they celebrated his first goal in his second spell for Rangers.

It may have been a special moment for Miller, but the best goal of the game was yet to come and it was from one of the most deserving players on the pitch.

Mendes has made an impressive start to his Ibrox career since his move from Portsmouth and he further enhanced his reputation with what is likely to remain one of the goals of the season, getting on the end of a Steve Davis corner and, with two or three Celtic players left upfield, capitalised on the space in front of him to thunder home an unstoppable effort from almost 30 yards out.

That man Miller made it 4-1, but not before both sides were reduced to ten men, Cousin receiving his second yellow of the game for persistent fouling after challenging with Stephen McManus.

But any numerical advantage the Parkhead side gained was cancelled out 60 seconds later when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink – who had only been on the field for four minutes himself – was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Kirk Broadfoot.

The Celtic fans were already heading for the exits when Miller hit his second of the afternoon and that may have been some relief for Boruc, whose mistake handed Rangers their final goal.

Mendes was quick to praise the striker for the role he played in Gers' victory under intense scrutiny and said: "To have played and scored like he did was great. I knew the pressure that he was under I think that it says a lot about him, he showed great professionalism."

Adding of his Old Firm debut, Mendes said: "It was a great result and a great game to play in, it was everything that people had told me it was going to be."

As a Celtic fan, have to accept we were well-beaten by the better team on the day. Congratulations to Kenny Miller who got the reward his industry deserves: I loved his full commitment to our cause when he played for us and admire it now he's in opposition. I am confident that Gordon will sort out the problems from yesterday's match and we will still win the League.

It was the rearrangerz support that gave him the 'kennt misser' badge in the first place.
We were offered £3m for a striker who was toiling for a starting slot, didn't score nearly enough goals, and who wanted away from Celtic because he could not command a regular starting slot.

It was in everybody's interests that Miller left Celtic when he did. I wish him all the best with Rearrangerz. Good luck to him.

I am more interested in Celtic's shortcomings, and Boruc needs to get his head sorted out. He was a liability for us yesterday, and he was obviously distracted...I think he should have declared himself 'unfit' for that match yesterday. It might not have saved us from defeat - who knows - but it would I believe have reduced the scoreline by at least 1.

But it wasn't just the the two goals for which he was badly at fault, he just looked gash throughout the game from terrible clearances and dealing with crossed balls. It can't help the back 4's confidence when the goalie is simply not at the races....Boruc frankly didn't look good enough for Cowdenbeath reserves yesterday, and I don't think that is any exaggeration.
He looked like a pub team goalie, and a poor one at that.

We also need a left back, but we've known that for two years and despite profits of £20m over the last 2 years and a guaranteed £10m CL cheque this year, sweet f.a. has been done to strengthen in this area.
I don't believe Strachan is at fault...if the board were saying to him 'here's £5m and £25k a week, go and buy a decent left back', Strachan would bite their hand off.

One can only surmise that the board will not allow him to make that investment.

Before the tic match I was amazed to see tic supporters TimMalloy, Paulmac, Idee, SoR, Helter, all with various predictions on the match result, from 4-0 to 4 and 3-1 etc. for the tic.

Well surprise an away win for the Gers against a team just making into the top 6.

To the tic supporters who had the stones to show up and post after the match well done, to the others who always seem to go missing in action after a poor result by the tic, you know who you are.

You're manager has identified the problem areas with his team and wanted to sign international defenders such as Tamas etc. Liewell would not pay the wages of more than 16k a week and that was why the player walked.

Liewell seems to like to put on a show for the tic supporters by signing players the Gers were looking at or rumoured to be going to Ibrox such as Brown, Deeks and Loovens.

Seems to be a pattern with his signings.

All the while giving the support BS about we will sign "bluechip players" ,,, when??

BTW

I saw the very disturbing news that Neil Lennon was attacked in the West End of Glasgow last night...according to reports, it was unprovoked and he was attacked by two men from behind.

These two cowards could start something of a tit for tat reprisal which could then escalate and quite honestly I have serious concerns about the direction this is taking things in.

I think it would help the situation were WS and BF to issue a joint statement condemning the attack.

Sir Minty is more than a little partial to making those 'political' signings himself, most recently when he tried to bring John Hartson to ibrox...and Mo Johnston was a purely political signing.

So Minty likes to have his fun in that department too.

Gravesen's deal was sanctioned by Lawell, and so there isn't a £16k a week limit...the board has shown that it will pay more.

For some reason, Strachan has been forced to 'make do' so far as the left back bearth is concerned. We have struggled by with Naylor over the last year, and looks like we'll have to do the same this year.

Hartson failed his medical at Ibrox first then signed with the tic. We should have signed him.

Correct you're board has sanctioned more than 16k a week for players, but that was the rumoured offer to Tamas, who then walked because of the low offer.

Maybe having been burned by the 28k and 40k a week to 2 players who contributed nothing in 2 years is why the tic board has cold feet when offering bigger wages, also Brown has yet to justify his 4.4mil fee and 30k a week in wages.

So its understandable with the you're boards hesitancy to pay top wages for new signings..

Ref the Neil Lennon incident. There are many stories going around, initially started early doors before the first editions came out, that NL was allegedlly acting like a buffoon and squared up to one or two people before getting rattled. Either way, its not on what happened. And no6, I dont want to go all followfollow on you here, but there is a list of Rangers players assaulted as long as your arm and I dont recal any of the rather hinted stuff of "tit for tat" you are alluding to. The list from Barry Ferguson, to Mikel Arteta, Peter Lovenkrands goes on of Rangers players the victim of assualt and I didnt hear anything from dignity fc.Not one thing.EVER You dont even know the facts and your spouting nonsense.

lennon was skelped for singing "alleged"sectarian songs and squared up to a lad that kicked the dooda out of him.
Police are investigating but so far lennon has made no complaint

Very well played, the Rangers team. Plenty of skill & heart. Our lot couldn't match them in the 2nd half. Credit where it's due. And specially well done to Kenny, who always gives everything nomatter the jersey. One of the few who ALWAYS earns his wages! Should be another close & exciting season.......

The Evening Times, the most up to date publication on the story, states that their enquiries reveal that Lennon was alone and attacked (unprovoked) from behind.

Presumably the ET didn't just make that up but spoke to a few witnesses....or is the ET part of some conspiracy ? No doubt as a rearrangerz fan, you might very well think so.

Yes...off-course all of these incidents arise from Neil Lennon being assaulted or threatened...most recently by two medical students who even after their conviction at Glasgow Sheriff Court refused to express any remorse.

They were initially charged with a racially aggravated assault , which would have ended their medical careers before it began.

The prosecution agreed to drop the racially aggravated aspect of the charge after consulting Neil Lennon, who in a spirit of forgiveness gave his consent to that part of the charge being deleted.

But those two morones couldn't even bring themselves to apologise...they him their careers, such as they might have in medicine.

Back to the game and the debate side of things.
I have long said that Boruc is a decent Keeper but has many flaw, good shot stopper but cannot marshall a defence, come for crossess or control his box, additionally he is a sectarian bigoted idiot. Following yesterday, can anyone disagree? that performance is why Milan have never made any Multi-gazillion quid offers, contrary to the rumours of the unwashed.
As for lennon, umpteen incidents, all after OF games, all involving 1 man, as for the students incident, Lennon got out the car and approached them after they gave some verbal, according to all other witnesses did not include any religious conotations, that is why the sectarianly motivated part was dropped. What cant be denied is that it is unacceptable and 1 man has seemingly failed to learn from years of repeated experience.

Also interesting what happens when the teams meet on a level playing field, ie, not having to sandwich 10 games into 18 days in the interest of sporting integrity for one of them!

and we appear to be agreeing, Lennon has form for this including the bouncer incident when he first came to glasgow, alleged sectarian assault until cctv shows him hammered and conitually giving verbal, having a swing and being 'assisted' from the area.
I just dont think beating seven shades out of idiots is neccessarily justifiable

Neil Lennon has never been charged or prosecuted during his time as a Celtic player or as a coach.

It has never happened.

There is however a procession of scots who have been convicted in court of a variety of criminal offences committed against him.

Ths is a player who retired from professional football on the advice of special branch.

This is a player who because of his religious , racial and cultural background attracts the attention of the worst elements of scottish society, and this latest incident is another example in a depressingly long list.

Must give NL. credit, this incident has caused us to post regarding the trouble late last night involving the tic coach.

Thus it takes away some of the ridicule of his teams pash poor performance and Rangers demolition of the tic in their own park.

Early days in the season but the Gers will only get better.

Funny the way a celtic coach/player etc gets involved in a punch up in the pub after an old firm game that they are the victim of a sectarian attack, whereas if a rangers player/coach does the same they are bringing shame on the club and acting like a thug.
Why the dichotomy?

My arent we the master of ready wit and repartee?

My point is valid, Ferguson was involved in the whole bothwell thing when a much younger player, appears to have learned from his mistake.
Recently we have had Mcdonald, McGeady, O'Dea, all involved in 'incidents'in clubs/pubs after old firm games. Never any chance they have a share of responsibility? Additionally this is not an isolated incident with Lennon. Whereas I dont condone the attack I do feel that it very peculiar that Neil Lennon has not yet learned to stay in after an Old Firm game, and has not found a way to avoid being the target of repeated 'sectarian' attacks. Obviously from your point of view there is no chance he has any responsibility at all for his own conduct in relation to the now numerous 'sectarian' incidents he has been involved in, including leaving the safety of a car to challenge 2 students who are then charged with assault. It is very hard to assault someone when they are in a car, and if they get too close you drive off, problem solved, but no it was the jedi mind tricks of those vile sectarian bigots which forced lennon to get out and challenge them, nothing to do with his own ego or self styled 'hard-man' image.
