1. THE REAL FOOD CAFÉ, Main St, Tyndrum, 01838 400235
The critical voices have faded. Peter and Maureen Maybank are the latest fans: "We stop there regularly to enjoy excellent food cooked and served by enthusiastic and cheerful staff. Sarah Heward and her late husband turned around what had previously
been a dreary Little Chef into what I overheard described by a customer as 'an oasis'. If there is another fish and chip cafe of this quality in rural Scotland, we have yet to find it." Mary Robinson said last week: "It is absolutely excellent."

2. PITTENWEEM FISH & CHIP BAR, 5 High St, Pittenweem, 01333 311258 Holds on at No 2 – but the Anstruther Fish Bar is coming back (see No 5) in the battle of Fife. Brian from Dunfermline is sure the best fish and chips are in Pittenweem, not Anstruther.

3. NORTH BERWICK FRY, 11 Quality St, North Berwick, 01620 893 246 Back in the Top 5 after fresh support, including this from Donald Carmichael: "I remember the North Berwick Fry serving the best fish and chips when I was a boy on holiday in the 50s. I had some last week and the quality is still the best."

4. MHOR FISH, 75-77 Main Street, Callander, 01877 330 213 Another one returning to the Top 5 after a new recommendation by Gillian Thompson last week, the latest of many ("plenty for the keen foodie" in Callander, she said). "Brilliant little fish and chip shop," said Sandy Bell.

5. ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR, Shore Street, Anstruther, Fife, 01333 310518 It's back and it stays. Maureen Murphy was one who answered the call for its fans to step forward: "Huge variety of fish and the best chips ever – they're practically fatless. For non-fried food eaters, fish will be grilled on request. Fresh fish grilled with a little melted butter – bet The Ritz couldn't do it better."

Well I still think the fish and chip dinner at the Pierowall Hotel on westray is very hard to beat. Where else can you get scallops and chips? or Tusk?
Getting hungry and mournful just thinking on it
