I THINK the summer heat must have got to me, but I never even mentioned last week that you were reading an Edinburgh Festival special. As you flicked through, I am sure that those of you with higher-than-average IQs figured it out, but I really should have made mention of the world’s greatest arts festival.
Then again, I dip in and out of the fests – and despite working in Edinburgh the whole jamboree rather passes me by. Normally, I’ll go on a drunken work night out, get to Late Night Live or the like and end up watching children’s shows called Silly Billy Bum Breath or something similar. We’ll take the kids to Fringe Sunday, go and see a bit of chainsaw juggling on the Mile and away home. To be honest, the beaches of East Lothian and country parks of Midlothian appeal more at this time of year. Maybe it’s an age thing – I’m 92, although I don’t look it.

On my day off last week, we had a great day out at East Links Family Park near Dunbar, East Lothian (01368 863607, www.eastlinks.co.uk) It used to be predominantly for younger kids, but they have added some exciting new stuff in the park – and have introduced some big go-karts, where two adults pedal at the back and two kids sit at the front. Looking at them, you might think you can manage it alone, but unless you are an Olympic cyclist (in which case you’ll probably be in Beijing now anyway), I wouldn’t bother. There is also a fun new addition to the trampoline area called the Jelly Belly, while the old favourite attractions – the train and the animals (llamas, rhea, Highland cattle, etc) remain. And if you ring ahead, you’ll get a discount on a block booking.

The winner of the Skye seafood hamper from last week is Elizabeth Henderson of Peebles. Enjoy.
