Demands of captaincy could bring out best in dynamic Fletcher

Published Date: 08 October 2008
THE decision to name Darren Fletcher as Scotland captain for this weekend's crucial World Cup qualifier against Norway is one grounded in the sound reason which has characterised George Burley's managerial reign so far.
Fletcher, for anyone armed with even fleeting knowledge of the manager's methods, was always marked out as the outstanding candidate, and takes over from the suspended Stephen McManus, who, in turn, had stepped in for the injured Barry Ferguson.

Both will look on as Fletcher, 24, leads his country for the fourth time, with Burley perhaps keen to see evidence of the fortifying properties an armband can provide for its owner. The Manchester United midfielder has not distinguished himself for the national team in recent matches, with Terry Butcher, the Scotland assistant manager, this week suggesting he is perhaps still settling into Burley's system.

The manager's solution for any lack of dynamism on Fletcher's part has been to hand the player greater responsibility. His promotion to captain is effectively a demand that he does not allow himself to drift out of the game.

Fletcher's only previous competitive outing as captain was the 3-1 victory against Lithuania just over a year ago. He stood out for executing the quickly taken free-kick which led to Scotland's opening goal, from Kris Boyd. Saturday will see Fletcher win his 40th cap but there is a widespread feeling among the Tartan Army that he has been below par more often than not when in a dark blue shirt.

Yesterday's news provides him with the spur to capture the sort of form for his country which saw Sir Alex Ferguson hand him a new three-year deal last week. There is, however, no question mark over the player's commitment to Scotland. Despite being almost five years younger than Barry Ferguson, Fletcher has only three caps fewer than his midfield partner. He was also handed the armband as long ago as 2004, becoming Scotland's youngest-ever captain at the age of only 20 years and three months in a 1-0 win over Estonia.

Burley will have taken this into account when selecting Fletcher, a popular figure amongst his international team-mates. He has always proved a willing performer for Scotland, often at the risk of provoking his club manager's wrath. Indeed, Sir Alex was angered by the knock he received in the final minutes of Scotland's friendly with Croatia last season, in what was Burley's first game in charge. The knee ligament injury meant Fletcher was ruled out for six weeks, and he subsequently missed out on a place in the Manchester United squad for the Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow.

"Darren has been an outstanding player for Scotland for a number of years," said Burley yesterday. "At the same time he has established himself as a regular player for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Since I took over, his attitude towards playing for his country has been outstanding. He is a player who is always desperate to represent Scotland.

"It is a measure of his talent that at his relatively young age he has achieved so much for his club and will win his 40th cap for his country on Saturday. I know he will be very proud to lead the players out at Hampden. He will do a great job."

Burley chose Fletcher at the expense of other candidates, including David Weir, Gary Caldwell, Craig Gordon, and, in the fevered imaginations of some, even James McFadden. Of this group, Weir's claim seemed the strongest. He has led Scotland on four previous occasions and is the last Scotland skipper to lift silverware – the Kirin Cup in 2006. He was also handed the armband for the first two games of Alex McLeish's reign, leading his team to European Championship qualifying victories against the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

While he won't be wearing the captain's armband, the absence of McManus will see Weir pick up his 62nd cap, joining Danny McGrain as Scotland's eighth-most capped player.

I think it should have gone to the best central defender in the Scottish game at the moment : Gary Caldwell.

He's been playing like a lion for Celtic since about March/April and he's very vocal in encouraging his team-mates and keeping everyone on their toes.

He's mentally strong having come through some difficult spells at CP, especially when he had to fill in at right back and his unforgettable error against Barca.
It's not easy to come through that level of criticism from your own fans and respond by becoming one of the best players in the team. You need to have a lot of self-belief and determination to turn things around the way he has.

For me, Caldwell has the winning mentality , the aggression and the personality to be a great captain...in fact, I think he'd do a better job of it than McManus.

Fletcher seems quiet and too obsessed with his own performance to mark him out as a skipper. He's a creative player, and is best left to just get on with his job.

Caldwell has a good number of years left in him, and I think he is now ready to step up to the plate as a captain.

People have spoken a lot about Boruc and McGeady being window shopped, but actually, if Caldwell can keep sustain this form over the season, it is he more than any other Celtic player that I would expect to see becoming the sunbject of a transfer bid.

Great news for Scotland that Miller and Thomson are out.

We may have to do something daft and actually push forward and try to score - something both players are completely unused to.

I see ex-Rangers man Charlie Miller is now plying his trade with Queensland Roar in the Australian A-League and is apparently doing very well.

Good to see him overcome his earlier personal problems as I always thought he was a very skillful player.

Great achievement for Weir to join the mighty McGrain on 62 caps.He must be delighted.

Montford's Jaicket,

Hanging around 08/10/2008 09:00:18
Fletcher has already been national captain; he was vice captain until that post was given to Steven McManus by George Burley so he is probably the obvious choice with Barry Ferguson and McManus both missing. I suspect that when one or both of those players are in the team Fletcher will revert to being 3rd choice captain. Provided we win, I dont mind who captains the team - they could play with no captain or 11 for all that. The result will be the important thing.

Why does the Scotsman have an article detailing the full Scotland 22 but no corresponding breakdown of the Norway squad? Is this lazy journalism or are we putting our heads in the sand and assuming that we will win? Could be dangerous! Norway are no mugs and Scotland shouldn't forget the recent away defeat to Macedonia, a team with a previous record of upsets.

Incidentally, before anyone else corrects it, Darren Fletcher is not Scotland's youngest ever captain. That honour goes to one John Lambie who was just over 17 when he captained the national side in about 1886. Sorry - must have been hanging next to Crampsey's Coat for too long.
22

Venachar,

Fletcher as Captain, don't make me laugh! Fine if I'm wrong I'll be happy as larry but Fletcher has given the ball away too many times in recent matches to even be in the team never mind Captain.
George, I fear this is a huge mistake which will come back to haunt you.
23

Who?,

08/10/2008 09:36:20
So we have the scottish phil neville as captain- not too sure about this one!

Scotland have suffered some woeful result while he has been on the park (belarus, georgia, macedonia etc) the reason for the defeats was the midfield were non-existent. If he were a leader he would have been more vocal or actually put in a shift. He can be far too annoymous for my liking.

As for Caldwell the guy is a eight car pile up waiting to happen. He is rank rotten in the spl week in week out. As witnessed in the dundee utd game earlier in the season (where the ref protected him) and again on saturday the guy can't be trusted to tackle an opponent in the box. Caldwell jumps with his hands above his head, it the ball strikes his hand its a penalty (except in the spl where its a free kick to sellic).

Davie Weir should have been given the captaincy as he is the only player in the squad who you could actually call a leader.

I hope we have 11 players, like Darren Fletcher, who want to play for SCOTLAND. No matter how good, I would hope that we never again give jerseys those who pick and choose when to represent their Country. As for cheats like Thompson, we are well off without his like.

Indigo Nightlight,

Fletcher is a big game player. You just have to look how well he plays for Man U against the rest of the big 4 when he plays. outstanding against Chelsea a few weeks back and has scored agaisnt Chelsea and Arsenal in the past.

Good choice for captain, as he was when he did it under McLeish. Don't remember eck getting questioned for that decision.
28

JACK EM & Wiggy: Two typical English/Rangers supporters who hate to see Scotland doing well. Fletcher may not have produced his best form yet in a Scotland jersey but he is proud of the jersey and has a club manager that support his national ambitions. If only that were true of successive old firm managers who have encouraged withdrawal from Scotland squads in the past. C'mon Scotland 3-0 on our way to South Africa!

Weir should consider himself fortunate to be in the team after he spat the dummy out at Bertie Vogts.

He decided not to return to play for his country until his old Everton Gaffer came calling.

Fletcher is now regularly in the Man U starting 11 and merits his place in the team. Why not as captain? No other obvious candidates.

McManus let Scotland down and shouldn't play for the nation again. Ferguson never gives his all for his country he just plays out the 90 mins.

Darren Fletcher has never had the misfortune of being singularly to blam for one of his countries poorest ever international results

That honour fell on Weir for his abject performance against the Faroe Isles in a 2-2 draw.

So shocking was his performance, that the normally amiable Bertie Vogts tore into the centre half.

Like a true pro, Davie Weir took the feedback in the changing room, then immediately savaged the manager through the media declaring that he would never again play for Scotland.

There is definatley unrest in the camp and a few of the players arent happy with burley or his way of doing things.

45, bazza is a tube, who always seemed to pull out of national games if there was a more important OF game on the horizon. He does nothing for the squad and we have better younger players to chose from now. BUT as is the way with OF players he will probably walk straight back into the next squad regardless as to wether he is playing regularly or not.

Reckon we're a decent bet for runner up as we wont beat the Dutch for points over the group games.

Then we'll probably lose a play off.

There isn't a manager elsewhere who would do any better with this group of players.

I cannot believe people are comparing George Burley to Vogts this early into the world cup qualifying campaign. I for one find George's tactics refreshing with more emphasis on attacking, passing football which is a joy to watch instead of the boring, defensive style of some previous managers. George is a great motivator and wouldn't underestimate the effect of his decision to make Fletcher captain. I would find a place in the team for Maloney. I would always play Boyd when we play with two strikers and will always score goals. Unfortunately his lack of games for Rangers may ultimately cost Scotland in sharpness. C'mon Scotland!

He had a chance at Blackburn, couldn`t hack it and came back home.

A lot of current mediocre players are getting into the hall of fame.

Scotland will achieve the same success in this group regardless of whether he plays or not. He will not be missed.

"I like to drag wee ninny in front of me - he's not really a bufftie but will do anything for cash when hes spunked his giro - and then i get to be 'lucky Pierre'..XXXXX...XXXXXXXXX..

Cant print the rest of it because it gets a bit graphic!

110 - Its common knowledge that during working hours, most town centres in Scotland are plagued by the unemployed and the unemployable. Mainly young men wearing dubiously stained Rangers gear.

I salute your efforts in not being sucked into this seedy underworld of desperation and Sunny-D. However, i do resent paying for your Reebocks. Maybe one day you can get a job and donate some money to charity.

Oh sorry, semi-retired at 42. Signing on once a week, great hours. 22 years on the dole, what a career!

Anyway, my CEO has requested my presence in a meeting. He's obviously not as easy going regards timekeeping as yours is...name escapes me...eh, who is the minister for social services these days?

Ninny has had all his hommo-errotic dreams come true today...talks of fights and hard men etc...

He even had what could be described as a "stauner" (nearly)

What a day he's had.

Ooooh The Glesga Banter....don't you just love it!

125 - cool down Ninny, while I dont want to imply that you ever 'had it'...you're certainly in danger of 'losing it' here!

Touchy, touchy...remember your dole money has been donated and processed by people of all denominations by the time a postman drops it through your letterbox!

Are you really 42 years of age ?

I would have bet you were no older than 22.

Reminds me of the old saying...."One is only young once but one can be immature forever"

Vs Norway.

Gordon

Broadfoot Weir Caldwell Naismith

Fletcher Brown Robson Maloney

Fletcher McFadden.

Daillyman - thats why Fletch should be captain ahead of Ferguson.

He'll play 2 positions.

I'll sub your second fletcher with Boyd and agree with the line up.

3-1 scotland

113 - Cant argue with that Brian, its has players who have good movement, players who have guile and players who can dig, Pretty solid at the back with some no-nonsense experienced performers and one enthusiastic rookie.

Yet again a knuckle dragger has to come into a post about football and lower it to comments regarding bigotry and other such cack.
But being a supporter of a 2nd best team as is his name, it doesnt take much to guess it also counts for his IQ
Away you go and infest your own threads with your bigotry, leqave the reak football for true supporters to comment on.
As for Fletcher , a good choice in captain, far better than the wee thug who couldnt hack it in the real games down south
