MIXU PAATELAINEN today admitted the international break has come at the ideal time for Hibs as they try to rid themselves of injury for the first Edinburgh derby of the season.
The Easter Road manager revealed this week that Chris Hogg is unable to train because of problems with his vision and headaches, while Ian Murray has been playing through the pain barrier after a heavy knock against Rangers ten days ago.

However, with Scotland in action against Norway at Hampden this weekend in a vital World Cup qualifier, the Hibs players have the luxury of a few more days to recover before resuming their SPL campaign against Hearts a week on Sunday.

Hogg sustained his head knock in the Co-op Insurance Cup defeat to Morton and has struggled with double vision and pain since then to the point that the defender ruled himself out of Saturday's 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

The player will not train at all this week but will be assessed when the players return from the international break and resume his normal fitness routine on Monday.

Murray, meanwhile, suffered a leg knock in the first half of the game against Rangers, although he was able to play the full 90 minutes against Jimmy Calderwood's men.

His leg is now heavily bruised and Paatelainen conceded that the extra few days' rest this weekend will help him enormously.

The Hibs boss said: "The rest this weekend is very important for my players and it is vital that we make the most of it.

"Everyone knows that we came back to pre-season training and to playing matches very early in the summer," Paatelainen went on.

"We have got a few players who have knocks and the free weekend will benefit them. Chris Hogg won't train this week at all and he really needs a proper rest from everything, including training.

"That's the only way to resolve a problem like that and obviously you can't be too careful with that kind of injury.

"We will get him back to training at the start of the week and hopefully by then everything will be back to normal.

"Ian Murray is another one, although he played at the weekend. He took a knock against Rangers and his leg is really bruised now – which is a good sign – so it is good for him to have a break as well to allow his leg to recover properly."

With the first team out of action, Paatelainen will cast an eye over the rest of his options in a closed-door game which has been arranged for him to see on-trial goalkeeper Khalid Sinouh in action at Livingston tomorrow afternoon.

Players like Paul Hanlon and Filipe Morais have found themselves in reserve-team action more often than not in recent weeks, but Paatelainen insisted that they are still firmly in his plans for the upcoming derby, adding: "These players are always in my mind because every single one of them applies themselves in the correct manner in training and in games.

"They are never out of my plans but I can only choose 11 players at a time and we have got a few options available to us right now.

"But competition is good for the side and they all have a chance of being involved in the derby."

Hibs don't have the defence to give anyone a pasting!

I say a high scoring game, maybe 8-9 to Hearts.

No seriously, Hibs through goals away but can also score them. Hearts can't score but are usually quite solid. Plus through in the derby atmosphere, the game is anybodys!

I think a new keeper is an unnecessary distraction for Hibs at this time. Why not give Maka a season to prove himself - if, next summer, he doesn't seem the man for the job, Hibs should invest a little in a quality replacement.

Mixu should spend more time getting the shape of the team right, in my view.

#2 You are correct, trying to predict a derby score is always difficult. It will all come down to who wants it most, and probably a little bit of luck as well.

#3 If you agree in the adage that you can`t be classed a good team if your Goalkeeper is poor then in my opinion we ain`t a good team. I agree on your point that the shape of the team is our most pressing issue right now. However, I wouldn`t say no to a reliable, good basics Goalie if one were available now. Technically Ma-Kalamby is very poor indeed and if I may say, he`s flattering to deceive. Have a wee look at most of his `saves` if you can (BBC Sport Vs Aberdeen highlights for example) All Aberdeen`s efforts were within a short range circle of Ma Kalamby`s frame. He NEVER attempts to hold. More often than not there`s a rebound although I admit in this particular game he batted away a couple quite well. Look at the theatrical roll after the save ..... who is the guy kiddin? I could go on and on with examples of his frailties but I`ll leave it that personally I don`t rate the fella one bit. Hopefully he`ll improve.

#2 Before you talk rubbish how about you look at the stats. hearts have lost 13 goals to hibs 10 this season. So that 'usually solid' doesn't seem so concrete.

Not talking rubbish, that's why I said usually. Fair enough you have a better defensive record at the moment, but come the end of the season I don't think so. Your goalkeeper, Bamba, Hogg and even Jones are average at best. Your attack is a different story...

#10 Oh yeah I forgot how good your defence was last season. Let's look at those stats, hearts goals lost 55, hibs 45. But hey don't let the facts get in the way, of course you're not talking rubbish.

p.s not only spelling that's not your strong point!

#12 Not checked up on the facts.

Perhaps you could help me out on some more?

Most derby wins, team with most goals scored in derbies, team with leat conceded in derbies, team with most consecutive unbeaten games, team with the top goalscorer in derbies, team with most Big Cups, team with most league titles or trophies in general!

Tell me these facts!
17

cockney Mike,

08/10/2008 13:27:30
We do need a decent keeper, but I'd like to think that Maka and Jones actually talked to each other, Maka might be that man - I reckon he'll be a top keeper in 7 or 8 years, shame he's our keeper now though!

As for the result, predictions are a mug's game, as the Jambos have done us too many times when they had no form and we had loads to even consider it. It all depends on luck/ guts/ heart/ fight/ spirit on the day. Both teams are too close to seperate otherwise.
18

yoyo,

08/10/2008 13:35:59
Listen I'm totally aware of the history, but forgive me I thought this all started by you telling us that presently hearts have a solid defence compared to hibs.
How about just putting your hands up and saying yeh I was talking rubbish, rather than the school boy ma dads's bigger than your dad tosh.

For what it's worth I think your new keeper looks like he could handle a busy day anyhow.

It should be pointed out that Hearts have actually only won 2 League titles since the 1900's! Some record for a big team. Although I will assume that the original poster had no idea of that.

Are you serious? if anyone sees red next week it'll be stewart. Our players wont need to get frustrated and make rash challanges 'cos we'll be comfortably winning.

Yipee I think one of your over rated, died in the wool players will over step the mark on this occassion. Don't think Mixu has the ability to keep them calm. Think you will see a steady and assured performance from teh JT's setting out to frustrate the hoobs players with a view to nicking one in the later stages.

HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen hopes to see a reformed Abdessalam Benjelloun on his return from loan in January.

The 23-year-old Moroccan currently on load to Belgian side Charleroi, was said to be "frustrated" by his increasing failure to make the first team amid stiff competition among the teams strikeforce.

27 - I'm assuming you didnt see the game - Aberdeen's penalty was just as dodgy as our's. Lee Miller (who has now overtaken Chris Burke and Mikolooney in the diving league) appeared to ignore the ball completely and make a bee line for Bamba, and then proceed to bounce of him straight to the deck (something he continued to do for the rest of the game). Bamba looked decent at centre half.
