West Ham wanted to sign me, says Obua

Published Date: 08 August 2008
HEARTS midfielder David Obua claims West Ham United were keen to sign him before he followed Csaba Laszlo to Tynecastle.
The Ugandan secured a work permit allowing him to move to Scotland yesterday, and he revealed working with his former national team coach at club level was precisely the challenge he was looking for.

However Obua, 24, who is recovering from a rib
injury, admits his career could have followed a different path if Laszlo was not lured to Edinburgh by Hearts last month.

"It is always the manager's influence which has a bearing on a player and I have worked with Csaba for the past two years with Uganda," said Obua. "He is the person who has really made me who I am today. West Ham United and Chievo were interested in signing me, but Csaba is the reason I decided to come to Hearts."

Obua signed for Hearts after a spell in South Africa with Kaizer Chiefs, and like the rest of his new team-mates, he is determined to ensure the club improve on last season's lowly eighth-placed finish in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

"We have to be realistic with our targets, but I am looking forward to getting back into training, working hard as a team and getting Hearts into the Uefa Cup and winning trophies again," he said.

Oh, dear. It would appear I'm the first to comment. Not that that really should make any difference... However I will keep it short.

West Ham wanted to sign me says Obua...

'No they didny, or you would have signed for them'

says everyone with the faintest idea of the implications of him turning down the EPL for the SPL...

Seriously though, he must have been sold on the promise of Euro fitba, or again Vlad has taken a very costly gamble...
'He's the South African league's best player' I'm sure you'll say. Have you ever seen South african fitba? It's gash...
'He's scored loads for Uganda' I'm also sure you'll say. Against whom exactely?
I watched Archie Thonpson play for Australia last night at the olympics he scored 13 goals in a game once. He must be brilliant then. except he's no...

I'm only saying it's a very costly gamble if it's true...

As for this story, not really new news is it?

He has signed for us, might be good, might be great, might never play due to injury, who knows?

It is a positive move which, along with all of the recent goings on, is a good sign for the coming season. Now if we could only find a striker.....

#8 Anecdotal. It's not double standards it's time saving. Every OF article gets closed because the level of hatred and bigotry between the extremes of the OF fans purs out on threads, sickening non extremists and the bile means all comments get removed and thread closed. Why start a thread when you know that's where it's going and the usual OF suspects are to blame.

Take it out on them not the Scotsman.

Errrrm wasn't it the day before yesterday he got the work permit OK?

Positive note : When (since Vlad came here) has a manager been allowed to search for and sign his own man as assistant manager ? Don't tell me that Vlad is actually sticking by his word (for the moment) to give the manager autonomy for the first time , because mark my words Burley had very little (he received many phone calls from VR DURING matches with "suggestions")

Getting Werner (does he not have brothers ?) is a subtle but decent step forward.
Is the game nearly sold out yet ?

#19 On that note talking about managers being allowed to do what they want, did anyone read the Scotsman story about Rangers?

BTO please pay attention here.

"''In apportioning culpability for what unquestionably eclipses any previous European failures suffered by Rangers, few of those currently involved with the club can be regarded as blameless. Bain, handed a considerable degree of autonomy by chairman Sir David Murray in handling the club's player recruitment, cannot reflect with any satisfaction on the outcome of his transfer business so far this summer."

The part in this which says Bain buys the players and has been given considerable autonomy "Bain, handed a considerable degree of autonomy by chairman Sir David Murray in handling the club's player recruitment"

Now correct me if Iam wrong guys but if this was the situation at Hearts would it not be splashed all over the papers. Headlines like "Csaba does NOT have full control" "Vlad still interfering" "Vlad buys the players" but its Rangers so it just recieves a normal paragraph written as if this is the normal thing, but its exactly what Vlad has done in the past

Double standards or what guys?

BTO care to comment on the FACT WS clearly does NOT have full autonomy, and Bain (Who last time i checked was never a manager) buys your players and is responsible for player recruitment.

Shaun Bartlett,an acquaintance,is playing out here now,so i'll get a good report.

Hope he is good as i want to see a strong Hearts side and not just because of the 'cheery' welcome at Tynecastle when the Hoops visit!!!Great ground and atmosphere and I genuinely do hope this new stand happens and adds to the occassion.

Spot on The times are a changing, although there is still the odd Hobo who has his head well and truely buried in the sand, We all told them months ago before the season had even ended how bad Mixu is, How Petrie and Farmer are ripping them off, how they are beng fed lies by a manipulative boad "Buy your season tickets now, new stand will start work in January" even though they DO NOT have financing in place and have not even decided what they want to build (Single or double tier stickle brick stand) for some as you say "The penny has dropped" and we don't mean from Petries pockets, there double lined and padlocked.

Hibs will struggle this year, of that I have no doubt, while Hearts will only get stronger, The difference already since Csaba has came in is massive, the whole place is alive again, players attitudes have changed considerably (Which was one of the main problems before) they look fitter this pre-season than they did at any time throughout the whole of last season.

IF Vlad is doing as he says and is going to stick to it then things will only improve more. Csaba so far has been allowed to bring in Obua and also his own assistant, this signals he is being given the full autonomy as promised.

It's easier and better for the media to concentrate on Vlad, they have turned him into a "Hate figure" within Scottish football, Granted he maybe doesn't help himself at times with some of his comments and his contempt for the media. But the media know if they concentrate on Vlad it hides the problems Rangers have (And would hide any Celtic had as well if it was them)

After all these media outlets are hardly going to bite the hand that feeds them are they.
27

Who?,

#20- superb post.

In scotland over the years very few managers have had total automony in player recruitment.

At hibs it was petrie not the manager who signed latapy and sauzee. Monkey was the only hibs manager of recent times to have the final say on which players put pen to paper, even then it was only after he could prove to petrie that the players in question could be sold on for a profit.

At aberdeen it was Milne who did the transfer dealings until Miller returned to the club. While Calderwood identified the targets its miller and/ or milne who have the final say.

Ever since Murray bought rangers he was the main driver behind player recruitment. He personally signed laudrup and gazza not to mention various others from Seria A during Smith's last stint in charge.

Fergus McCan (probably the greatest celt of the modern age) was in charge of player recruitment and sales. Since he's left dermot desmond has taken over- who do you really think signed and financed Roy Keane?

#24-Standard.

Romanov doesn't help himself for sure however he is a colourful character and his issues with Davis the linesman just like Levein's about the holier than thou 'Reverend' were right and had to be said.

In the case of SDM and his chosen few in the media for sure he certainly feeds them and they print copy verbatum without question.

More folk need to realise 'don't believe the hype'.

If Celtic were in the trouble Rangers are in the media would barely mention Romanov, though i'm sure he'd be giving more interviews like Tuesday to change that somewhat!!!

Did you hear his chat on Radio Scotland???That man pulls no punches and talks some sense. It's refreshing.

Totally agree with all that, and its not like it is hidden information either, none of that are secrets, we all know club owners/directors who have bought players or had influences over managers about who to sign and not sign, we all know many of the players owners/directors have purchased, you name a few, there have been many more.

The media etc go to great lengths to tell everyone how bad Vlad is how his buying of players has destroyed Hearts etc etc. In reality he has done nothing different from any other Owner. Where they do have a pop quite rightly was his interference in team selection, but just how bad ws it really, Frail said he was never told who to pick or drop, he did say Vlad wanted to know the team who was playing etc, and why he thought those players should play, is that a bad thing? If i was putting millions into a business i would want to know how my money is being used, and why decisions are being made.

Have said for a while Vlad brings a bit of excitement to a dull league. My only gripe I've ever had with Vlad was his meddling too much. Business wise cannot fault him. As for his comments he shoots from the hip and speaks with a large degree of openness about Scottish Football, The SFA etc are not used to club owners in Scotland speaking out against them, Owners in this country have been to scared for too long about the consequences. I had hoped the Levein situation would go further, Levein was prepared to go to court against the SFA when he was at Hearts, it was only the pie man who talked him out of it. That would have been a perfect oppertunity for Vlad to have got on the phone to ET (Eddie Thompson Not the alien)to say to him "Lets stick "Together" on this" and to have taken it all the way.

Rangers are going to struggle badly unless drastic action is taken... they need to sign at least 6 players to challenge for the league.

Where are they going to get the money to do that though?... try and bid £i million less than Wolves for a SPL defender again?

Something is badly wrong at Ibrox I think and their little poodles in the press are sitting on it in an attempt to help out.

I have yet to see an 'Ibrox in Turmoil' headline or a broken Rangers crest... Why is this do you think? Is everything rosey after all?... Personaly my guess is no.

How badly would the circulation of the Daily Record be effected if they were to lay into rangers the way they do hearts and to a lesser extent celtic?

Rangers can't even sell Gums to bring in the cash as that would leave them with Webster (next stop the Glue factory) and Dailly and Weir who have a combined age greater than that of the Galapagos Island's entire Giant tortoise population... Don't even get me started on their midfield either, Hearts reject Pilly-biter torn them to peices in the absence of Basketball Barry... how much did petrie squeeze out of them for Thompson again?

I am desperate to see that smug little creep bain squirming and stuttering in the face of the famous Rangers' head hunt.

The fact is despite all the criticism aimed at Vlad Rangers have won One Scottish Cup and one Disney Cup in the time that vlad has been in Scotland, they have finished 2nd twice and 3rd once... in the same period hearts have won one Scottish Cup, finished 2nd once.

Sure rangers have won one more cup than us but it was the Disney Cup and despite doing it twice they have only managed to match our highest place finish in the same period... second, this is acceptable for a club of Hearts' size... is this really acceptable for a club of rangers' supposed size?... I think not.

I think that we are seeing the culmination of a policy of buying the best that the other SPL teams generate as a means of restricting their progress while not really improving the Rangers squad.

In keeping the 'gulf' between them and the rest of us we are seeing how gullible some of the younger players in the SPL are. You are not moving to Rangers to further your career but to warm the benches instead of showing your talents week in week out for a 'lesser' team.

I think there could be a degree of truth in that. Bain has probably been put in place to make sure WS does not overspend, It has been rumoured and reported for some time now that SDM is not as financially secure as he once was. The money Rangers have spent this pre-season was based mainly on them qualifying for the CL, the ripple effect from them being dumped out will be seen come January and next season.

It is known FACT and has never been hidden SDM has been trying to offload Rangers for some time, but with debts rumoured to be some 100million+ NO-ONE and NO business will touch them at present, not with the credit crunch and possible reccession on the way. The banks are refusing to lend them money for the proposed Ibrox development and Murray cannot find outside investment. Not that they might ever get to build on the site, as was mentioned yesterday, the area around Ibrox where Murray wanted to build was industrial area and much of the land is contaminated, (Thats not before mentioning the contamination from the fans)

Rangers are in trouble, the fans dont want to believe this, they are petrified to even contemplate such scenarios.

The money down south and the determination of Vlad has ensured however that for every Webster or Killen there is a Bednar, Gordon etc furthering their careers elswhere.

Young players must realise that the Olf Firm are nothing more than larger minnows in a pond of minnows when compared to the EPL.

If a young player is good enough then the big fish will spot their talent without ever having to do a spot of bench-warming.

Fletcher is a good example, he has been spotted because he plays week in week out.

Could be a lot of the time the take the easy option for the money, some maybe do not have the confidence in their own ability to go down south. So think if they move to the OF for more money they may eventually get a chance, problem is, usually by the time they do get a chance they have rotted so long and have so many splinters from the subs bench a lot of the talent they possessed has disapeared.

#16, 22, 25, and all the rest who believe in the mythical 'OF'...

...1. There is no OF - There is 3IARSTB4 SPL Champions and well known CL regulars Celtic, and then there is plucky cash strapped, permanently raging and perennially second best Rioters FC aka Scotland's Shame...

...2. Celtic further improve the image of scottish football every year, with clubs and supporters in Europe, (and further afield), looking forward to and welcoming the world renowned ambassadors of Scottish football as they become more and more of a permanent fixture in the world's premier club competition with each passing year...

...3. Rioters FC tarnish the selfsame reputation and bring misery, violence, ridicule and embarrassment every year to the continent, (well, obviously not every year), and to their own home city, (Liverpool fan stabbed in the neck after 4-0 humiliation), to the consternation of the ONLY true minority at RFC, (the decent fans). Fans who hide their faces in their hands in exasperation at whatever latest negative publicity the rest of the knuckledragging 'peeepul' saddle the long suffering, cash strapped and crisis hit club from Govan with...

...4. Your comments demonstrate the eagerness, nay desperation to blame the ills of Scottish football on a perceived 'axis of evil' called the OF, whilst absolving all others of blame.
Hearts - Laughing stock wannabes with a mad dictator at the helm, (whose stock is sinking faster than his pink submarine), and fans happy to hang on his every word, desperately believing his empty promises.
Hibs - At least trying to play entertaining football whilst securing their club's solvency, just needs to break open the biscuit tin after welding it firmly shut a number of years ago. At least the fans have some bottle about them to challenge the club about their concerns.
Motherwell, Dundee United and Aberdeen utilising limited financial resources and acheiving good results lately due to genuine managerial talent, sadly, realistic

sadly, realistically not much more than pretenders to the throne, as evidenced by the Levein scandal...

...5. The rest...

...So, while I would welcome being able to make comment and stimulate debate on threads concerning my club or their closest rivals, even the moderators of these message boards realise the futility of opening the 'other' threads to comment at this time. History has shown us that instead of having the courage and moral fortitude to face the harsh reality of the situation at hand, the majority of the follow followers prefer to attack, smash, burn and make the world a much more unpleasant place to be...

...thankfully there is light in the darkness, it is a faintly flickering torch of belief, decency and hope borne by the 'good guys' represented by daillyman, fayneant, bring them on and a few long suffering others...

...see what they have to put up with and cheer them on in their quest, for it is a gargantuan task;

My my... Aren't we a little up ourselves today, I am sure that the rest of the champions League are quaking in their boots at the thought of facing Caldwell, Sno and co.

I bet Messi is sitting down right now in the managers office saying 'How are we supposed to counter zee awesome world renowned abassadors of Scottish football'.

Meanwhile celtic have John Reid as a director, a man who was instrumental in the name of our country being tarnished by our involvment in illegal wars.

Celtic have very little to be smug about but I am honest enough to admit that you are light years ahead of rangers just now.

The CL look upon you as cannon fodder and just there to make up the numbers.

#56 Bring that head up out the sand for some fresh air before you suffocate....on second thoughts keep it in there...

"Hibs - At least trying to play entertaining football"

Hibs havent played entertaining hoofball since Monkey Heid was in charge...More Hobo Myth.

"At least the fans have some bottle about them to challenge the club about their concerns."

What exactly are the fans doing? protests? demonstrations? boycotts? (Although they would be ineffective wouldnt they? to have a boycott with impace you have to have the fans to make the difference noticeable) Placards and banners at the games?

Face FACTS hibs are going backwards Hearts are going forward...as much as that might pain you to see, it is FACT...we are in a better position now than we were 6 mnths ago, hibs are in a worse position...And there are many hibs fans on here that have and can admit to that...only the thick blinkered retards that dont want to see it like yourself are still bumping their gums making fools of yourselves.

When did hibs last win a game?

There IS an old firm. They got the name through acting together in self interest against the rest of the country.
This was proven by your recent 5% tickets thing- as ever the OF work together for the benefit of themselves and screw everyone else.

To say there is no OF is just wrong.

There is an OF and you are part of it, like it or not.

Example - who signed Basil Bole - Murray - HE SAID SO.

Who signed Andy Webster - Murray - After all Rangers tried to sign him when McLeish was in charge , then Le Guen tried to ....Smith eventually got Webster to actually sign.
Was it too much of a a coincidence that ALL 3 managers wanted him OR WAS IT MURRAY ?

A number of years ago the daily rioter had a go at Rangers about a reason I totally forget (some sort of expose).
Murray banned all communication to that paper and banned their journalist from entry to ibrox.
The rioter appologised months later and have been Rangers slithering lap dog ever since.

"History has shown us that instead of having the courage and moral fortitude to face the harsh reality of the situation at hand, the majority of the follow followers prefer to attack, smash, burn and make the world a much more unpleasant place to be..."

Shall we ask the victims of suicide bombers and the civilians caught in the crossfire in Iraq if they feel that John Reid and his cronies have been guilty of a little "smash and burn"...

Typical celtic fan, all hollier than thou but in reality your club has gone from being a noble children's charity to a an organisation who's fans raise money for terrorists and sing songs in support of them while their directors help push through plans to invade other countries on the pretence of fighting a 'War on Terror'.

Typical laughable celtic arrogance with no grasp of reality.

...Really? I think AC Milan, Manchester Utd, Barcelona, Benfica etc. would tend to disagree with you there...

...#65 - So you believe that it's fair for Celtic to administer the sale and distribution of tickets to games at your ground where ALL the proceeds go to your club? Interesting business strategy...

...#66 - "up pops a troll from the other side of the ugly sisters" & "please bog off back to your bog"?...

...admirably tolerant and not at all bigoted or offensive...

...#67 - Doing well until, "Still giving to "the cause" are you? just the other half of Scotlands shame you lot"...

...still, says so much more about you than it does about me. If you knew anything about me at all you would know that I unequivocally condemn any and all terrorist organisations and any form of sympathy for them. Wonder what the OF fans think about their clubs effectively taking the levy from them through the increased prices for their fans.

I would prefer to play these games with no away fans, would be safer all round and would still be sell outs

Did we not just recently cut the allocation to the Old firm... strange behaviour from a club who depends on them for survival.

I am not even worried about this ticket thing, just sell the tickets direct from Hearts and take their details and if/when they start their little folk ditties then ban them... Something the Old Firm are reluctant to do it would seem.
