PASSENGER numbers at Scottish airports fell last month, fuelled by a drop in charter flights, according to figures published today.
Airport operator BAA Scotland said 1,988,432 passengers used Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports in June – a drop of 1.8% on the same month last year.

Glasgow Airport saw the biggest fall, with passenger numbers down 4.9%.
BAA said this foll
owed a 10.4% drop in charter traffic, with the number of seats available for sale down 6% on last year.

Passenger numbers also fell slightly at Aberdeen, down 1.9% on last year.

International traffic grew by 1.3% but the number of domestic passengers dropped by 4.9%.

Edinburgh bucked the trend, recording its busiest ever June with 859,382 passengers – a rise 1.5% on last year.

BAA attributed the growth to expansion by Ryanair, Monarch and US carrier Delta at the airport.

Spokesman Donald Morrison said: "We are continuing to see a drop in demand for UK routes, particularly flights to London.

"This is partly a response to the increasing availability and growing popularity of the direct international services now available from Scotland.

"There is no doubt too that airlines are reducing capacity in response to falling demand, rising fuel prices and higher taxes, all of which have resulted in tougher market conditions.

"Nevertheless, passenger numbers are up this year and we continue to work to attract new airlines and support our existing carriers by reducing airport charges, and improving service through increased investment."

In the year to June, BAA Scotland's three airports handled more than 21 million passengers, a rise of 0.6% on 2007.

Just imagine how much busier Edinburgh Airport would be if direct flights to the Middle East and Florida were available?

I'm trying Joe, I'm trying, but I fear the concept is simply too exciting for my brian to handle.

Just imagine how much fuller your life might be, if the airport shut down, and you were compelled to find something more rewarding to enthuse about?

No.2 : Alasdair. If you read the penultimate paragraph of the feature, particulary from words 9 to 16, you will recognise the crass stupidity of your comments.

Is it any wonder that passenger levels and flights are down?

What with the added charges and taxes being assessed practically every day it may come to the day when ony the rich will be able to afford to vacation at Tenerife.

But why anybody in their right mind would want to go to the overcrowded beaches and bars and hotels is beyond me.

I went there two years ago for the first time and there was so much fish and chips and gravy and lager on the menus that to get an authentic Spanish or Portugese meal you had to pay an arm and a leg because it seems that Britishers will NOT give up their national grease-laden grub even when travelling.

I might as well have been in Brighton.

The passenger numbers will decrease across all UK airports in time due to the economic disastrous times we are about to face. Time to get on the trains people!

Your comment of the airport closing down appears to be strongly on you wish list.
#4.. I wish the Edinburgh Airport knockers in this forum had the same interpretation of the written word.

Oh dear, typical of the man, Joe whines to the mods and gets a post canned.

Joe. Use all your brainpower here. Try to understand:
1) I do not want the airport closed down - I've used it 3 times so far this year. It would be a hassle to go further.
2) Completely non-contradictory to statement 1), IF the airport closed down, you would have to find something slightly less weird to fetishise.

I dare say your rather odd bitterness about everything to do with our West-Coast cousins would continue unabated, but we can't have everything now can we?

#10, where can I see (or even get my hand on these "Edinburgh Airport knockers"? I've never seen such things at Glasgow - no wonder our passengers are down and yours are up!

#13 I take it that you are a big fan of HEARTBEAT and don´t like progress. Pity if you need an ambulance, but you will probably expect an old duffer on a bike

Number of flights are decreased, number of passengers decrease. Is it heartening to know that our airports don't encourage wing-walking.

It is just a seasonally adjusted blip due to a new method of collating the figures. There is no recession and the air industry continues to thrive and grow under Liebaaah!
I can categorically say that flight numbers are up as there is increased traffic between UK and Afghanistan and Iraq.
Also enabling flights will increase traffic at Prestwick!
